El paraguas
« on: 19 Oct 2009, 05:29 am »
capwkidd asked about my avatar, which is a pic from the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. He wanted a high-res version.

Back then (2007) I had only my Canon S2 IS. It wasn't too bad, with 5MP and it also had a nice little zoom (12x?) I really want to go back to Mexico City and take more pictures with my better lenses! With 20 million people and all the history, there are so many photo opportunities.

Anyway, here are a few higher resolution photos of the central pillar/fountain of the roof of the courtyard of the National Museum of Anthropology. It is known as 'el paraguas', 'the umbrella'

Here are reasonably sized pics, if you want hi-res let me know

Of couse, this giant pillar, with water just falling all around, dominates your senses as you enter the courtyard. Worth the price of admission to the museum - about $5 for non-Mexicans. The museum is said to be the best in the Western Hemishpere.

This roof is completely supported from the central pillar, except for the two cables seen on the left.

It is an amazing architectural feature by Pedro Ramirez Vazquez

There's something you don't see everyday (I mean, aside from the avatar that is).  It's kinda like the world's biggest gas station awning.  I sure wouldn't want to screw up the math on that sucker.  Is the roof designed to hit the adjoining structures if it were to ever tip one way or the other?
