Cornet 2, first no problem then the hum
« on: 17 Oct 2009, 07:54 pm »
My first ever project, and also first time doing wood stuff

I really need your expertise on this one.
When i had a unfinished wooden framed cornet 2, it was quiet and
sounded more beatifull than i anything i?d heard on vinyl.
Also got new speakers suitable for tube amps, Living Voice Auditorium 2.

When i finished with the final box, took out the insides and fitted
then in to new frame. There is this really loud humming sound.
The bottom is alumim plate, and underneath the wood top is alumiumplate.

I used Mundorf Supreme capisitors and F+T and some Solen and Panasonic low esr.
Earthing and everything is exactly the same as in the demo version,
even the wood type, same top, same bottom.

I have done all the checkups, went through every tinjoint, tried
diffrent tubes, made sure that all earthing cables are fine.
Meter shows that all the voltages match in 10% tolerance.
Tried diffrent amps, locations, powercables etc etc

- Could this be caused if i accidentaly overheated the the earthing
point on signal input?
- Could it be that the transformer is to blame?
- or what?

The saddest thing is that on demo stage everything was just great, no hum.

Also building or actually allready build identical looking Cornet linestage with same components, just waiting to receive the transformer

If you can think of anything, i?ll try it

Hail Jim for finding the solution!  :D

Some paint had come of from inside the rca holes, showing clear alumium.
The plastic rca covers were bad and allowed rca to make connection.

Everything is just perfect now. Aah what a relief!  :thumb: :thumb:

And now waiting to finish Clarinet, and start the building of 300b poweramp
That will look the same. Should receive last parts wednesday

Nice looking Cornet, satai74!
Hope you have as great a luck with the Clarinet as they are a great combination.
That'll look sharp all tricked out with the wood like that.  :thumb:
Congrats on finding the hum!!

Cheers mate  :D

I have to say that i really like those Mundorf Supreme caps.
And ill use them in cornet, clarinet and poweramp, plus on poweramp there will be Mundorf Tubecaps also.
So if your pondering on what caps to use, i recomend that you also consider these.
Only bad thing is that they are not cheap
