Recommend an Integrated Amp for Spendor S5e
« on: 13 Oct 2009, 04:39 pm »
Hi all,

Looking for recommendations for an integrated amp for my new Spendor S5e in a 10'w x 15.5L x 7.5"H dedicated music room. Currently have an Audiomat Solfege Reference 38w/ch integrated. No complains with it, but wonder if there are better matches for my speakers.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I have listened to S5es for several years.

I have used a Cary SLI-80 (between 12 and 60 WPC depending upon tubes and UL or triode mode) with my S5e for years.  The Spendors are not efficient at all so depending upon what volume you like and how big your room is more power may be in order.  Just today I re-installed my Llano Trinity hybrid amp (~375 wpc) and it sounds great so far.

Hey Fred,
I highly recommend and own a Bada DC-222 hybrid integrated.
This amp is driving 4-ohm inefficient Dynaudio 3.4's in a ded room that is 12'6" x 15'5" x 8' with ease.

To get the best dynamics, soundstage, bass and midrange, the stock pre-amp tubes must be changed.  I tried 2 different sets of 12AU7's and like the GE 6189's the best.

Not sure what your budget is, but you can check it our here...pacificvalve.com

Good luck,

Thanks for all your replies. I was considering solid state integrated, since I already have a tube integrated. My budget is $1500. New or used. I listen to 90% jazz. I'm not sure I can better my Audiomat, but was hoping someone that has or had Spendor S5e might have suggestions for an integrated they liked with them.

Try a Naim integrated; either the 5i or the new XS.  Naim will add kick and drive to the Spendors at the expense of some ultra treble resolution.

Consider the Van Alstine Insight Control Amp. YOu can buy a new one from Frank within your budget.

A Bryston b60 should do the trick. I've got one feeding Spendor s3/5 s on stands in my dining room, and a big dog Bryston 4bsst for the a pair of S8e s in my living room, but before that the b60 drove the big speakers quite nicely. The 20 year guarantee's a plus too.

cheers,

Bill
