SF, your statement is inaccurate. Most tables have a synchronous motor and lock on 60 cycle sine wave, rather then line voltage. Lower voltage will reduce the torque, but not the speed. That is the magic of a synchronous motor and why they are used in turntables. However, I will agree that it is nice to have clean voltage (can't hurt) and the voltage variation may actually be not so swell for the upstream electronics.

I will definitely audition this phono stage next year - an in home audition that is. So, hopefully, late next year, my system will be completed. Then in the following year I may have to replace my Corolla as it will have almost 500,000 Kilometres on it.

Just remember that a turntable will never leave you sitting along a cold, snowy and windy Ontario highway in mid January so you might want to rethink that purchase sequence. 

Do you have a vinyl collection now or are you looking to start from scratch?  I'm coming from the other direction and have 400 or so records and would only listen to maybe 150 of them now.  I decided I was either going to buy a really good SACD player and spend a little money upgrading my existing TT or buy a good CD player like the BCD-1 and an all new TT, tone arm and cartridge.  In the end I just didn't want to go back to the wondrous days of yore and all the fastidious activities associated with the proper maintenance of a vinyl system.  Vinyl is indeed a hobby within a hobby.  This is such a highly personal and subjective choice and I was just interested in your thoughts.

I totally agree with you Bill that is why I have only spent a small amount on a TT. However, for the small amount that I did pay, I can say that it sounds very good and is very satisfying to listen to a different type of sound. I also enjoy the fact that you can now ourchase new LP's for almost the same price as a CD and 80% of new music coming out follows up with a vinyl press! There must certainly be a market here!

I do not actually plan on expanding to far into this part of audio and that is why I also purchased a USB phonobox so I can load them to FLAC using a program to do this. I will have an analogue sound in digital format or so I hope!

As I do not have a TT as of yet and of what I have heard from a previous TT audition - I think that you have more "bang" for your audio buck with a TT over a CD player....

Laundrew, you need to get a table. You have a good attitude, and if you don't mind flippin' a piece of vinyl every 22 minutes or so, there will be great rewards. I was recently at the RMAF and had a chance to audition some rather spendy units. I think with something like an Technics SL12100MKII and a good MM cartridge, you'll get 95-100% of the sound, as good as some $7K machines I heard. Don't know your musical tastes, but there is lots of used vinyl to be had. Around here, you can get a nice LP for $5 or less.

If my wife?s PT Cruiser was my daily driver, I would agree with you 100% - I hope to get 250,000Km out of it, if we pour more money into it. Her Chrysler is going to have the dubious honour of the last North American vehicle we will purchase.

I never really considered a TT until I heard one earlier this year. The difference in audio quality between the SimAudio Super Nova and Michell TT (with a tube phono) during the audition was huge!

I will basically have to start from scratch again as I carted most of my albums off to the Goodwill store a few years ago - duh!  I am looking forward to comparing a future TT directly with my X-05. As for budget, I am forecasting that I will spend the same amount on a TT (not including the phono pre) as I did on my X-05.

Thank you for your kind comments. I clearly remember the audition. I did not enjoy the audio at all from this particular CD player(mid $6K) / system and I was getting ready to leave when the dealer offered to play some vinyl on the Michell.

What a difference and I mean huge! I sat down and I enjoyed the audition which lasted over half a dozen albums or so. I mostly listen to Gothic music, however, I enjoyed the audio quality of the music the dealer played on the TT (from Jazz right up to classical).

I do not know very much about TT's at this time and although they require more work to properly maintain a system such as this - it is definitely worth the extra time involved.

I have a Technics with the top of the line Audio Technica MM cartridge...and it is superb, imo.
