Finally stepped into the rhelm of analog!

Well, I decided to finally buy a starter kit consisting of Pro-Ject Debut III with modified cartridge to a Ortofon 2m Red and a Pro-Ject PhonoBox mk2 USB! I already had some old LP's that were never used that I bought figuring maybe one day I would take the leap!

All I can say is WOW! This is basically a cheap starter kit (however quite refined for the price!) and I am already hooked!! For a whole 800$ my perspective of CD's will never be the same!

I am learning how to FLAC them to my server  which is sort of easy with the USB box but still in the early stages. LP's are also easy to come by and most new albums that come out follow with a vinyl copy so looks like I will be busy for the next little while.

Some months back I unpacked my old Thorens TD-160 (circa 198x), ordered a new drive belt, a Shure M97xE and phono amp.  I was pleasantly surprised at how good the sound was, I had completely forgotten the very comfortable sound of vinyl.

1ZIP I had a Thorens TD-160 or 166 Not Sure back in 70's

But it was a  RED MAHOGANY COLOR

I kow what you mean. I was auditioning a system and I did not enjoy the audio at all - until the dealer switched to the turn table :o

Anyone know the list price of the BP 1.5 in $CDN? I do not remember if I seen one during my auditioning runs...

Congrats OP!!

I had a Project Debut III before I upgraded to my Michell table...

The Project is a pretty solid table for the money, and I am sure will give you hours upon hours of vinylly goodness...

Enjoy, vinyl is supreme.

What type of Michell table do you own - I auditioned a Michell Gyro SE MK II with a Michell Technoarm, and an Ortofon Rondo Red MC Cartridge with an Aethetix Rhea tube phono. Sounded really great :D

I have the same setup you heard. The Gyrodec SE MKII and Michell Tecnoarm.

I have a Dynavector cartridge though, and I am using a Dodd phono stage.

Since I am new to the vinyl thing, I cannot compare tables and will learn as I go but from what I hear now I can say that I wonder how CD's can really beat this? I cannot fathom the idea of a (let's say) 5000$ table beating every single CD player in existence! Truely amazing fun having to get up and turn over a piece of vinyl and what incredible dynamics!

Those that have not tried their Brystons with vinyl are really missing out on a new color free sound and above all.............popcorn sound is free!

Hello danman,

The CD player I auditoned was in the low $6K range and I did not like the audio at all. The Michell TT blew it out of the water - granted that they were also using a tube phono section @ $4500. I was in awe and hope to add a TT late next year.

No doubt that at those prices, the sound must be amazing! Imagine, I'm ecstatic over a 1000$ addition! The good thing is that I can find everything I want (or almost) on Amazon.ca even one of my newest favorites of the year....Chickenfoot!

There are some things that turntables do that no CD player, no matter how much it costs can do.  The reverse is also true.

Vinyl has a sweet seductive sound IMO.  It just gets music right. 

People will debate the whys and hows of analog vs digital all day long.  The way I look at it, why pick between the two when we can enjoy both?  There are some recordings that are great on vinyl and horrible on CD, and vice versa.

Not that I'm trying to get you to spend more, but if you're planning on keeping the Debut or moving up the Pro-Ject ladder, the Speed Box is a huge sonic upgrade.  For about $120, its a no-brainer.  It doesn't just change speeds.  It cleans everything up and adds a huge dose of PRaT.  It'll take the Debut up a step or three.
