too bad I didn't see this thread a couple of days ago, I would have taken that PSU off of you Brian.

Well, a couple of days ago I wasn't looking to get a SilenX, so you didn't really miss anything Josh. And in fact even now I shouldn't pick one up for low $ flow reasons.

As it is the Enermax is not the noisy part of my setup. The CPU fan is much, much worse. The Enermax is almost impossible to hear as it is. But someday when I've got the spare $ I'll work on quieting things down even more.

My brother just built a new PC with a 3.0 P4, and the Intel-supplied heatsink CPU fan sounds like blender.  He's got a Zalman unit on the way that's supposed to be very quiet, but he'll have to put up with the lawnmower noise for now.

That's exactly my problem right now. Still have the OEM fan on my 2.0 XP. And it's damn noisy. I'm surprised I've not fixed that yet. But there aren't a lot of heatsinks that'll accept a 80mm fan that will actually mount to my board & fit when both processors are installed.

The SilenX looked good. But a closer look at the heatsink and I noticed that it won't mount to my mobo. That woulda been a nice HS/Fan combo...

FWIW, I have built several computers with a PS from Silenx. I have not had a problem yet, the oldest is about 1 year and runs pretty much 24/7. I have also had good luck with similar units from PC Power & Cooling.

Did you check to see if the Zalman will fit?  It's spec'd @ <20 dBa, that's pretty quiet.

That's good to know that they're at least fairly stable. One would think that given the cost that they're made fairly well. But then again you don't seem to be able to buy them anywhere but from the manufacturer. So who knows what the markup really is.

But it still would be cheaper to just replace the fans in the PSU I've already got if it is entirely possible. But I'll remember in the future to try out a SilenX if I need a new one or someone else I know does.

The Zalman is waaay to large to fit. A friend of mine has the same board, and he went with heatsinks that a 80mm fan mounts to. And the HS is no wider than the fan, but there's only a few mm's between them. Which cuts the Zalman's (at 109mm) right out of the picture.

Hmmm...I was thinking Zalman made a CPU cooler with an 80 cm fan, too.  If so, http://www.endpcnoise.com would probably have it.  The Nexus PHT-3600 P4 Quiet CPU Fan is fairly small & lite, too.

I don't recall seeing a Zalman heatsink that wasn't your standard square style. They've either been the big copper fan deck or huge copper circle type.

The Nexus is the right type & mounting design

But it's only got a 70mm fan on it. So I need something like that with the same clip mount, that would accept an 80mm fan. I know it's out there, as I've seen them in the past. I just need to find them again...

try this heatsink, not quite square but can mount all the different fan sizes up to 92 mm without modification

Found the AMD version
http://www.plycon.com/cpuc/st_mcx462v.htm

Looks like it'd work just fine for my app. A bit spendy at $50 a crack, especially when you need 2 of them...

Cheap Quiet HSF
It is not silet, but it is pretty darn quiet.  Also has cool colored LEDs.

I'm really thinking of trying the Zen heatpipe cooler from Scythe.  Zero dBa- it's totally passive cooling.  I read a review of it and it keeps a processor inpressively cool.  My little 2.7 Gig Celeron is well within the range of CPU's that it's rated to cool. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-185-102&catalog=62&depa=1

Ahh, now that's more like it $ wise. I could get 2 of those, then pull the 80mm fans off them and replace them with Papst or other silent fans.

I have no idea what size fan I need.  :(

I have a Mushkin midsize ATX tower with Hydraulic door and I couldn't find the size of the fans anywhere on the net.  I was trying to order all new quiet fans as my computer currently is ultra loud.  Anyone have any ideas?

I also have an AMD Athlon 1Ghz proc on a ABIT KT7-R board.  Suggestions on a good but not too spendy heatsink/fan for this?

Measure the fan.  The main sizes you see for case fans are 80, 92 or 120 mm.  There's other sizes but it's probably one of those.

The thing was I was making an order and wasn't near my PC.   Was trying to get an idea of what standard case fan sizes were, but I think there is no such standard.

80 mm is kinda the standard.  It seems to be the most common size.  The 120's aren't super common, at least on minitower types.
