Stereophile Review of BCD 1
« on: 7 Oct 2009, 04:26 pm »
In the measurements section from the Stereophile review of Bryston's BCD-1 it states the following:

"Like players from Simaudio and Naim, the BCD-1 shows a fairly large suckout in the mid-treble, meaning that preemphasized CDs will sound a bit distant and lacking in dynamics. Fortunately, such discs are rare these days, though I believe the BIS catalog was all mastered using preemphasis."

I searched the forum and did not find if there were any comments concerning this.  I wonder if Bryston can elaborate more on this topic and if anyone can indeed verify that the BIS catalog were mastered using preemphasis.

Thanks for you time and if this has been discussed before, my apologies.

Hi Rich,

As I understand it in the early days of CD's some record companies would boost the high frequency content of the music during the recording (to reduce noise) and then the CD Player would de-emphasize it on playback (similar to FM tuners)

As far as I know this is rarely done these days. Not sure on the BIS question.

Thanks for you prompt reply. I guess the article 'insinuated' that there are players out there that do not de-emphasize. So my original question was with respect to the decision and/or data points for a manufacturer doing it or not doing it. Since it appears that current CDs are no longer de-emphasizing then the question is rather moot.
