We are back from RMAF!
« on: 6 Oct 2009, 12:12 am »
Frank and I are finally home. It was a long drive today, getting up a 3:45am to get on the road. I had a blast at the show and I'd really like to thank a lot of folks for showing up. It was fun to finally have some faces to the names and now I know that the AC truly has some fine "family"members. A big warm thank you to Oneinthepipe, Lonewolf, vinyl_lady, PEZ, Tyson, Listen2tubes, Twitch54, ECrammer (ED) and his friend Paul, coldfoggie, WGH, Jim and Mary Salk, Dennis Murphy, Frank Van Alstine (for taking me with) and I'm sure a host of others that I just can't think of right now (too tired).

I will post some photos from the show and add some more comments tomorrow. Now I need to eat something and watch the Vikings game.

Thanks guys! Here is a photo of the room as it was on Sunday. On Friday, we really wanted to showcase the new Ultravalve amp(s), so the Soundscape 12s (HT-4) were fed by 2 Ultravalves in mono mode thru Franks Phase Inverter Bridge that put the power at 60 watts per channel. The power strokes were very impressive and the mid-range of the speakers on all material was excellent.

On the remaining days, we loaded the Soundscape 12s with the 550 Ultra and used a single Ultravalve to power the HT1s, Ht2s and the Songtowers, which again was very impressive, considering the 30 watts per channel, playing to very satisfying sound levels.

Glad you're back. Vinyl circle is getting a bit boring, too, guess I should have realized you're out of town! Did you debut the cartridge alignment stuff?

How about posting a pic of Frank? I never met him in person...

This link is posted somewhere else around here but is worth repeating. The Absolute Sound described the new UltraValve amp as the 'Greatest Bargain at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest'. Link includes a picture of Frank, beaming just a bit, I think. :-)

It was great to meet Wayner and One in the Pipe as well as to see Frank and Jim again, and of course Jim's wife Mary. I was lucky enough to hear the system set up both ways and could see what all the good comments about the Ultra 550 are all about. But I am a hollow state fan so I have to give it up for the Ultravalve pair

Been busy getting caught up, I'll post some pix soon.  Great show. :thumb:

Wayner,

It was nice hanging out with you and Henry (Oneinthepipe) at the bar Friday night.  It was also nice to meet Jim Salk Saturday.  He was gracious enough to play both of Ed's test tracks.  Hope to see you guys next year at the show.

Hi Wayner,

You said the UtlraValve pair put out 60 watt/ch.  I thought using the inverter would increase the power by a factor of 3 or about 90 watts/ch.  Can you help me with the confusion?

Thanks
Dave,

Wayner

No, it's 30 watts per channel, 60 watts in mono (with phase inverter).

ltr317, it was a blast hanging with you guys too! Every member I met from the AC was first class.

Dave:

I think that the wattage increases three-fold with the phase inverter bridge and solid state amps.  With the tube amps, there is something about the output impedance or the output tubes' total output capacity that doesn't provide the same effect.  The UltraValve in mono behaves more like a 120 watt or higher amplifer than a 60 watt amplifer.  I drive my Salk HT2-TL with a single Ultimate 70.  I couldn't believe that the amp is only 30 watts per channel.

You mean the rep from that Classical Music mag?  I was there, but didn't drink alcohol that night.
