Don't always trust RAID
I've used RAID mirror for years but as a reminder its NOT a true backup.
As bad luck would have it, my fairly high-end Antec PSU (designed for servers) shorted out the other week while it was off (PSU's today are never really off, they are in a constant state of standby), the short took out the mainboard and BOTH hard drives - burned and dead.

Ditto.
Scary stuff to deal with when you *think* you're protected.

Seems to me the best (and cheapest) way to protect your files would be to have two separate external drives. Manually backing the main unit to the secondary unit as you feel necessary.

Wow that's a tough break!

Did you figure out what kind of short it was?

I've been rebuilding my big system all afternoon and into this evening - there was some kind of connection issue somewhere - either something wasn't seated properly or there may have been a small plastic fragment in some slot. I pulled out the motherboard and removed everything but the cpu which seemed to be fine. Finally got it all put back together and it seems to be very stable now.
