Lonewolf, I am satisfied with the overall character of my Europas and see no reason to switch to a less neutral cap. As to my other components, let me preface my list by saying that I'm slowly converting our decidedly low-fi HT system to a questionably mid-fi 2 ch. system. I started with the Europas, and I'm substituting each next weakest link.

You might want to start a new thread and ask the same question.
However... since you asked... I love the neutrality of the Europa's. If you like them, this is probably a sonic characteristic to keep consistent in the rest of your audio choices. I agree a preamp is the first place to start. You'll need to decide the features you want before you start eyeing them up, though. (phono section, remote, etc.)
If you're looking for simple, you may want to consider an Eastern Minimax. It's neutral but, can be made to change with different tubes... if you want a little more warmth or 'tubeyness'.

Dodd makes a good preamp and the prices range from 450 and up. The Purist is a solid state pre that is probably very good but, I haven't heard it yet. But, I will. Another one I haven't heard but, wanted to was Van Alstine's preamps. He has a forum here. Lots of features for the money with the T5 he sells.
I had an Audible Illusions 2-d that I thought sounded very good musically but, also provided a lot of noise that was unacceptable. I think mine was worse than the average, though. Before that I had a Melos 111 which provided a sort of mellowsound... not great. I had a Hegeman Hapi II solid state that could beat it in dynamics and upper end clarity.
There's Bent who makes passive pre's and then there's Decware... then there's a million others.. many of which are incredibly good. I've found the preamp comparison to be akin to DAC comparions... tedious and painful... plus, there's no giant relief like when you find the right speakers. It's like, oh, that sounds really good. Hmm. I guess that will do nicely then. Pay attention to impedance matching as well. I think that makes as much difference as the electronics sometimes.
Good luck,
Carl
