speaker cables for the OB servo subs?
« on: 1 Oct 2009, 05:30 am »
As the wiring harness for the plate amp looks like 14 ga. I've been running some cheap 14 ga. speaker cable I got from Home Depot.  Would I gain anything by going to something else? I assuming (but we all know what that gets you...) that subs don't require exotic cables.

BTW: I had the low end cutoff set too high. Once adjusted I'm getting some serious butt kicking low end. I thought I was happy w/ these before!  :D

How far is it from your amp to your sub?  I have my amp 5 feet from the sub so I use Canare wire, not that it's better but it is what I had.  If you amp is really close to your sub I would say you would have nothing to gain.

If you're happy with what you have then don't worry about it.

In my experience even a short run of wire can make a difference.  How much value can be attributed to that difference depends on the listener and his/her wallet.

In the end if the quality of sound matters to you then so should every link in the chain.  At least that's how I look at it.  And yes, even a lowly subwoofer can benefit from a quality cable.

I upgraded my sub cable from the cheap monoprice RCA to Analysis Plus Sub Oval and the difference is remarkable.  The bass became cleaner, tighter, and punchier

Are we talking speaker cabling or interconnects here?

Since he said "RCA", I would assume interconnect.

I'm talking about the hi level amp to speaker cable. I'm running Gronenburg TS premiums ICs from the pre to the plate amp input. The wiring harness just seems like pretty cheap stuff, so I was thinking it just didn't matter much. If it did, then why didn't they put in heavy duty connectors or at least solder tabs on the amp for the hookup? I realize that the plate amp was originally conceived to fit within a sub enclosure and have very sort leads to the speakers. My setup is well...a little different. You're pretty much forced to use the factory wiring harness, as it plugs into a socket on the amp.

While we're on the subject of wire, what about the power cord? I just ordered the parts to make up a cryo'd version of the famous Asylum cord for my digital front end (transport and DAC PS), but totally forgot about the sub amp. I've got decent PC'd on my pre and power amps. A Stan Warren on the pre, and Gronenburgs on the Stratos. I guess I could just try swapping in a better cord and listening....huh?

I mounted my amp in a box that sits in the floor on the side of the room.  Since I had to extend the wires I used Canare and cut off the stock connectors and put a 4 post Speakon connector on the amp box and on the sub itself.  All of this is not advised unless you really understand the wiring of this system.  To be honest I don't believe it made any difference in the sound it just needed to be longer so that is the way I went about it.
