Super Pas 2 Build Started
« on: 1 Oct 2009, 01:24 am »
My Super PAS rebuild kit arrived on Tues. At the same time I ordered the ground plane gold jackset kit, a fiberglass selector switch and a spare rectifier tube. The basis for the rebuild is a Pas 2 with the brass faceplate and the brown knobs.
I've been listening to stock unit for about a month trying to capture it's sound in my mind for comparison with my new Super Pas.
The kit is really well done, with top quality parts and most importantly clear, consise instructions.
I've populated and soldered 2 of the PCB's, but they will have to go on the shelf for a while. The chassis gets gutted!
The only original parts left aside from the chassis and faceplate are the xformer, rectifier tube socket, blend switch, power and tape monitor switch. It is no longer a Dynaco product. My efforts are now on cleaning up the chassis and faceplate. I had to replace all 4 ac outlets as all were damaged, this neccessitaed enlarging the cut outs on the back panel. By the way, as they will now accept a polarized plug, do I have to wire them any differently? The replacememt power cord provided in the kit is not polarized. Do I gain anything by using a polarized power cord? Probably not.
Another hitch as explained in the assembly instructions, the origional Dynaco brown and gold knobs will not fit on the new volume and balance pots. No worries now, but I may have do do some mods later.

Good luck Ian,

Lots of fun and a big improvement over a stock PAS.  You will enjoy the finished results.

Ian,

Congrats! I think you will love your SP3 rebuild. I've done two and both were great. On one, I eliminated the tape monitor as I have no use for it. That freed up two more jacks on the jack set. I modified the selector switch to provide two additional inputs for a total of eight! I designed new faceplates from Front Panel Express using there free design software here:

http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/en/download/front-panel-designer.html

I bought new aluminum knobs from Antique Electronic Supply:

You can view my units in my album gallery at:

Let me know if you need any assistance with the rebuild. When done, if you really like it, you may want to spring for Frank's line buffer board for it. I'm considering it as well.

The rebuild is progressing quite well, I am down to the home stretch with the wiring of the new fiberglass selector switch.
I have a question though, the switch consist of 2 wafers, each switch location has 2 tabs, 1 on the fronts of the wafer and one on the back. Am I correct in assuming the the wire should bridge these tabs.

Thanks,

Ian

Ian,

Yes, you can run the wire through both tabs if you wish. They are connected through the rivet securing both tabs to the fiberglass body of the switch.

Thanks for the info Ron, if thats the case, i'll just solder the one tab, less work.

My Super PAS rebuild kit arrived on Tues.

I'd love to see a step-by-step pic progression...if you're so interested and inclined :)

Hi gjs_cds,

Unfortunatly I got so caught up in the build I neglected to take any photo's.
Here's a picture of what came out of the stock Pas 2.

Stock Pas 2's are getting hard to come by, and I feel kind of bad that in the future, if someone wants to listen to a stock Dynaco Pas, they won't be available.
This photo is of my almost completed Super Pas, totally wired up, and I am very tempted to fire it up, but I think I will give it another check! I will tidy up the wiring after I check it out. All in all I am quite pleased with my build and look forward to listening to it.

...wow!  Looks great.  Hope to see a review online sometime soon :)  (I've got an old Dyna that I'm thinking of upgrading as well :)

Well I checked everything and I couldn't find any wiring errors. powered it on. No led lit! Checked out all the volatages, everything ok. Bad LED, wiring error? I don't know! Put it into my system with my U70, initial impressions, well worth the effort. Tight bass, mid's and highs very well defined, very musical and very listenable. No fatigue. I have only tried the CD, Phono tommorrow. Dead silence when I stop the CD, no hiss or hum. Amazing. I feel very good, just like I did when I first powered on my U70. I am good!
Tomorrow I will check out that LED.

Hi Ian:

Nice wiring job on the kit!  Regarding the LED:  Make sure the polarity is correct.

Thanks Larry,
The LED is now working, it was wired correctly at the LED end, but I reversed the wires on the power supply end. Rather than correcting it at the board, (once that board is secured and wired it would be a royal pain to remove it), I just swapped the wires at the LED. You know I must of gone over that wiring about 5 times to make sure everything was correct. Oh well!
Some time in the near future I will send it to you to get the buffer boards installed.
On your site for the Super Pas you have a view of the unit taken from the back. I notice 2 upright boards, are those for the buffer? If so iI might have to reroute my switch to I/O wires as it appears to be a board installed beside the phono board, right were I have my wires routed.

Those are the older buffers from several years back. The new board which is an Insight+ board I believe, is only available for the line section. There is no phono buffer board anymore. Frank says the new line buffer provides better performance for the phono section since the output of the phono board is routed through the line section. If you really like the result of your rebuild and have no plans to buy an Insight+, T8, or Ultra preamp, the line buffer would be a very worthwhile upgrade.
