Another silly question more to come
« on: 30 Sep 2009, 08:09 pm »
Hi guys I'm trying out a denon dl 110 cartridge on a Rega rb300 arm which came with my luxman table. My silly question is this,is it a must that it be used on the MM setting on your phono stage or can it be used on the MC setting?

It's claimed to be a HOMC (high output) so plug it in and see if you hear anything. I'm betting you will as most HOMCs run about 2.5mv as opposed to the usual 4-5-6mv output of a MM.

Hi,
I run a dl160 through a CA640P and after seeking assurance from a few 'experts'  accepted assurance that the 160 was not likely to overload the MC stage for a 640P and so tried it through both.  Ended up leaving it through the MC as whilst excellent through both, just a bit more dynamic and open through the MC connections with its different loading.

Can't guarantee this would be safe with any other phono stage but is fine in my system and have read of many others that prefer the MC presentation with a 160/640P combo.  Just by way of observation and in case its of interest (as its a pretty logical outcome), my active pre amp volume control is now in about the same position for CDs and LPs (normal listening volume) whereas it needs to be turned up quite a bit for the 160 through the MM stage to achieve the same volume.  By way of comparison, a Shure M95 I have is somewhere in between the two dl160 volume settings with its about 4 to 5 mv. :)

Hi LM,Wayner,
First off I must agree with you on the output of the Denon cartridges and in my case using a passive preamp that would certainly help. But,I must say I am a MM man.I replaced the Denon with my old but trusty ADC Xlm mk11 and that full rich sound just came forth.A realism to the music especially in the mid range was just so right with the ADC.Thanks guys for your responses GOD bless.

Love those old ADC's  :thumb:

I'd rate my ADC XLM III Improved with upgraded Astrion stylus assembly more enjoyable than the Denon DL-160 with upgraded van den Hul cantilever/stylus.

Both are quite good...and the Denon may be somewhat incorrectly loaded (too high) at the standard 47K input of my preamp.

They're both good tho....but the ADC keeps my coming back just a little more often.

Both are in my top 3rd of cartridges tried....over several more expensive ones.

Yup - still kicking here.

I've just been buried with work here - 90% of it connected with great opportunities  for growth :thumb:

I check in and make sure the troops aren't getting too rowdy with one another (as Facilitator of the circle), but it's true that my post count isn't as frequent of late.

Hey, go to PriceSmart in sunny St. Michael, Barbados to see our Magna Cart

Keep lovin' the tunes...regards, John
