Is anyone still using the Alpha LS
« on: 27 Sep 2009, 08:30 am »
Hi guys, I was poking around the internet today and came across the Alpha LS speakers. I see the are now discontinued. So who is still using them, how do you think they compare to Danny's latest speakers?

Gary Dodd of Dodd Audio uses the Alpha's for his reference speakers.  He's not in a hurry to change.

Glad to read that Gary is using them.  Those were a difficult build for one man in his garage shop - took me about three months of spare time  :weights:  I wonder how much, if any, that Padauk veneer has darkened.

I have a pair of Alpha LS that I built a few years ago. I am very happy with them. I have 2 brothers in law who are musicians and they tell me that the Alphas sound more like live music than any speaker they have ever heard. I have owned many expensive speakers in my day and the one thing the Alphas seem to do better than anything I have heard is to sound good with any type of material. This is why I am reluctant to move on. I am sure that the latest generation of Danny's line sources are better but if I was going to consider another speaker it would be the Venue.

Hey Mr C,
My understanding of them is that they were basically replaced by the LS-6 (and LS-9) which, I believe Danny can still sell as a kit or you can buy built from AV123 (I think thats in Canadia land though?)

I was fortuned enough to help Gary packing up for the RMAF.
The gears sound awesome.
Snap the picture while Gary's not looking.
Everything else ... have to ask Gary.

Tony,

Gary still has to find a source for one or two of the parts used in that buffer. He will get it ironed out right after the show. Right now, the one that you see is the only one.

I'm still enjoying mine very much!  Very accurate and natural sounding speakers.  I LOVE those planar drivers! The Alphas make it easy to hear tweaks or changes to my system.  And the are quite non-fatiguing.  I've found they take a bit of juice to get the best out of all those woofers!  I'm driving them w/ a AKSA LF100 which does the job w/o breaking a sweat.

Building them was a BIG project for me.  It was on again / off again over the course of a year or two.  It was hard to find the time to work on them and it was also hard to physically handle the enclosures as they got bigger and heavier during construction (I have a very small "shop" area).

As I said, I still enjoy them and I have no intention of replacing them soon.

Its cool that they are still in use, great speakers just seem to endure time. I think I would like to try a line source one day........maybe a true line source, floor to ceiling.
