thoughts on buying used cartridges?

Have been perusing 'gon for used carts as the prices seem much more resonable.
What are the standard pros and cons of used cart buying?
hate to think of throwing a grand or so at an unknown quantity...
Appreciate your thoughts and concerns.

I got my Benz used and it worked out fine.  Hi Rez photos of cantilever should show you that it's not bent or otherwise out of whack.  You'd have to trust the seller to accurately (or truthfully) disclose how many hours might be on the stylus.  Retipping a cart is usually not tooo too expensive.  If you got a great deal on a used catridge an unplanned retip wouldn't be too bad, would it?

Bill,

Are you looking at just MCs or do some MMs fit the "bill". Most MMs have replaceable stylus but the stylus replacement cost is usually 2/3 of the original price so there really isn't much savings there. Re-tipping as suggested by E. Rex is a great suggestion. The really big question buying used is: How many hours is on the thing?

I have sold a few carts here on Audiocircles. They have all had extremely low hours on them and where is great condition. I think if you can find a seller that is up front with you, that is most of the battle. I also think that almost everyone here is a great member and would do their best to describe the condition. I have my doubts with eBay or something like that.

I have a Sumiko Blue Point Special sitting in a box. Hours are unknown, but the stylus looks good. I'm sure other folks can chime in on what they have laying around. I've sold a Grado Gold to The Chair Guy, a Rega to Blackmore and a Shure E97xe to (I think richidoo), can't remember that one. Maybe this is the place to ask anyone if they have a high quality, low hour cart they wouldn't mind parting with.

I would trust a seller with many posts, especially related to vinyl reproduction and also many feedbacks.  Moreover, the hours should be in the lower end, like much less than 500 hours, unless it is something like a super duper High end cartridge with specific magnetic designs that cost $$$$ and perhaps the retipping cost more than justifies the used bargains you are getting.  Moreover, people who usually sell very high end MC cartridges tend to have a couple laying around, which means that whatever cart they are selling usually have been used sparingly.

Nevertheless, I would look into some web vendors.  I scored a quite expensive low output MC from a famous Japanese manufacturer brand new in the box for about 50% less than retail due to a mistake that was made in advertisement.  I was looking into scoring an extremely low mileage entry level cart from the same manufacture but it was "Sold" so the owner graciously sent me the next most expensive cart in the line, brand new in the box for the same price!

Good luck with the hunt.

It's like any other transaction buying used audio, nothing's certain. As previous posters have said, the sellers previous sales track record is an important indicator (but not a guarantee.) I've bought three used cartridges and two were as advertised. The third was obviously used more hours than advertised because there was a skirt of crusty welded vinyl around the stylus that took an hour of careful cleaning to remove. In the end, it was fine though. I'd be less leery of dealer demo cartridges. Quite a few of those show up on the 'Gon. Personally, I'd stay away from the "stylus slightly skewed, but it came from the factory that way" moving coils that are always showing up for sale. I know you can align to compensate. I've done it before and it sounds and tracks fine, but it just bugs me to see a cartridge aligned that way.

I'm reluctant to buy used cartridges simply due to a couple of past bad experiences.  Transaction feedback is not always the best indicator.  You aren't always aware of the fact that sometimes you are buying third and even fourth hand because that information isn't aways disclosed.  So sometimes you are dependend not just on the honesty of the seller, but also of the person he bought from.

I have had better luck buying new from dealers who are willing to discount.  There is much more margin for the manufacturer and dealer built into the price of higher-end cartridges.  So don't think there isn't some wiggle room.  There are very few brands that you can't haggle over price.  Sometimes you have to be flexible and willing to wait for the right opportunity to come along.  If you don't like a dealer's pricing and terms, try another.  Naturally, if only a Koetsu Rosewood Signature will do then you will very likely be stuck paying list or trying to find a used one.
