I have been reading all about the Beatles remastered albums, but I want to know if the redbook cd's that have been reissued to go along with the Neil Young archives are a marked improvement compared to the previously issued ones.  He is offering them in three formats: redbook, dvd-video, and blu-ray.
I understand that the dvd-video and blu-ray will be in higher resolution, but wouldn't the redbook also benefit from the remastering?

Perhaps I have a tin ear, but I didn't notice a major improvement in quality.  But OTOH I didn't think the original CDs were bad quality anyway, especially as compared to the original LP albums.  I remember taking several of my Neil Young LPs back to the store because of defective quality back in the day.

I did hear a noticeable improvement in the Beatles remasters, but again I'm not sure how much of that is due to the fact that I hadn't really listened to any Beatles albums through (except Abbey Road) in at least a decade.  In the Beatles case, it may have been a rediscovery as to how great their catalog really was, from beginning to end.

I tend to believe you as well.
After reading Pete Fornatale's book on Woodstock, I've had some new interest in the bands of my youth, and have been wondering if these newly issued discs are showing that much improvement.
The shocker for me so far, has been the Sundazed version of the debut album of Moby Grape.
No sooner did they reissue it to great reviews, then the evil manager/lawyer of the defunct band
claimed his "rights" and it was stopped.  Copies of this cd on Amazon and ebay are outrageous!

Update: I just picked up the 2009 reissue of Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere",
on the liner notes it states:
Audio Tape restoration and analog-to-HDCD 24-bit 176 KHz digital
transfers by John Nowland
Digital editing and mastering by Tim Mulligan
I played it and then played a song from my original cd...maybe it is me, but I can't discern
any real difference.  Perhaps the original recording needs to be done in these higher sampling rates for it to reap the real benefits.

Well,
All the interest in the Beatles, but not other music that has been remastered?
I have spent a good hour+ this morning trying to find reviews that deal with the main question:
Are the remastered versions clearly better than the second generation issue redbook cd's?

Nobody seems to know, or care, save for comments on the 500 pound gorilla, the Beatles.
On the Neil Young front, all I get is the general assumption that the DvD-Video and Blu-Ray "should" be better.
And I've found squat on the Creedence Clearwater Revival Remastered cd's from Concord (Jazz) Music Group, which purchased Fantasy Records about two years ago.
Less compression, more dynamics???
If anybody has a link to a comprehensive review on these reissues:Young and CCR, please give me some links.

Hi Everyone-

The Beatles remasters definitely do sound better. As for other artists, it depends on the re-issue. Some are great, others aren't. The remastered "CSN" sounds much improved.

Some hi-res discs sound improved, and some don't. You do need a pretty serious system to hear the hi-res improvements if they are there. On an average system you may not be able to hear the difference.

I haven't heard the Neil Young discs. I did see a review that praised the sound.
