Chime Center LED stays Red: Blown tube?
« on: 22 Sep 2009, 03:14 pm »
Turned on my stereo last night and when I went to listen nothing came out.

The center LED (status of high voltage circuits?)  did not turn green and it felt like the rectifying tube was not warming up.  Did my 5y3gt blow and would the chime turn on if so?

Is the Sovtek 5y3gt the best tube to go with in replacing it or should I look for something else?

Any help appreciated.

Yes, sounds like the rectifier went south.  You can also use a 5AR4 or similar.

How are sonics effected by changing the sovtek 5y3gt to a mullard 5AR4 GZ34 or something like this?  I see that the Mullard tubes are quite an order of magnitude more costly than the 5y3gt.  Is it worth it?

On my clarinet i added a gz34 and it increased bass.I only use gz34's now.
I am in the future buying a mullard.
Will it make a difference in your chime?I don't know but i have never read a bad thing about that tube.
If it's too expensive mullard set up a factory  in japan years ago. Those tubes from that factory are supposed to sound as good but for less.Sorry don't know the name,Maybe someone else does.
