Here is a preview of the Yamamoto Soundcraft YS-500.  Looks like an interesting design.  I was wondering if any experienced OB users had tried the Eminence woofer (Neo 2515) and could explain the published frequency response?

In the article, Yamamoto claims 35hz extension, but is that really doable with a woofer's FS >50?

Thanks

Interesting design.
It also puzzles me about the box resonances since the depth is more than the width of the front panel. What's truly the purpose of that bar on the back of the woofer?

Looks like the woofer's Fs is actually 42hz.

After reading the article more closely, the manufacturer's comments suggest the brass bar is affecting the woofer's parameters.  I could see how its Qms would be altered - what about its resonance frequency?

Martin King's paper on "U", and "H" frame Open baffle woofers explains the reason Fs is lowered.

IIRC it's the air reacting with the cone.

This looks like a neat concept, I too have questions RE: the bass alignment.  It seem to me that there would be a resonance issue with that enclosure up around 500 Hz.,  though it may be filtered out. There wasn't much info on the XO in the article.

For those of you who are math shy, 1 million Yen is in excess of $10,000.  I think Yen was in the 90 Y/1 USD ballpark today which would be ~$11k.  That is silly amounts of money for a speaker whose drivers are << $1,000, the box is simplistic and is fatally flawed in concept and execution.

I doubt you could filter it all out electrically.  Its going to have nasty effects on the sound no doubt.  (not directed at you, you just brought up the obvious).  It looks as though there is no attempt to dampen the resonances that will predictably occur (which would result in a cardiod polar response, at least at some frequencies).

JoshK, No offense taken.

I too went back and re-read the "review", funny that it's called a review, the last paragraph allows that they haven't even been heard yet. I quote:

"To learn how these observations and associated expectations translate of course requires listening. A conclusion with extensive listening notes will be added once the loaner units have been crafted, dispatched and tested..."

With only 3 components in the first order XO, no filtering is possible.  The Japanese do tend to prefer a "different" bass sound that we westerners, but I can't see effusive prose being published over something you've not even heard as being smart or fair to your readers.  Kinda makes me think twice about anything 6Moons might say/have said.

All that said, the woodwork looks exquisite.  That cherry horn is beautiful to look at, and the laminated cherry on the U frame is double the challenge, finished inside and out.  Get rid of that industrial grille on the woofer- Ugly!.

To be fair the Yamamoto is placed in the column "Previews", not "Reviews".
It says: ''When shopping for new components, timing can be of the essence. Here you find previews of components without any listening impressions yet. Think cliffhanger-style TV programming to whet your appetite for more.''
