choice of CDPlayers and speakers?

Hi, am considering one of three cdP's don't have a ton of money to work with, so: Cec from audio Advisor, Music Hall cd25 and the new NAD 542I.
Also, has any one listened to the EFE speakers? Thanks.

Did you mean NAD C541i or C542? NAD has just got the C542 out and I don't think they would replace the model with an improved version any time soon.

You can find an NEC 601 ROM drive for roughly $20 bucks on Ebay.  I seriously doubt the above names listed could remotely keep pace with it. ;)

I've thought about getting one of the NEC drives based on previous threads here. This review was included in one of those threads--

perhaps you should try it before you knock it pin.  The nec drive has quite a following as one of the best transports at any price.  Buy it for 20 bucks, a decent digital and something like an dAck! and there is little doubt that it would destroy the NAD.  Hell i had it and a melior dac up against my $6000.00 player and in a lot of ways l liked the NEC more!.

cheers

Is there any way to do the normal CDP things w/a CD ROM drive, (eg. FF, REW, PAUSE, Prog, etc)?  Seems like you'd lose some of those funcions.

Well Rob, don't know, I was originally asking about choices of three cdplayers, which to get. I also asked if anyone has heard any of the EFE speakers from Ed Frias?

Ray,

I have not heard the 3 CDPs listed but am getting the C542 (which is not even out yet) myself. Right now I am using a NAD 541 - which my dealer has lent to me til he gets the C542 in - with a NAD C372 and pair of Monitor Audio Bronze B2s. As you can see, I am no where near the audiopile level. However, I do think my humble kit does pretty well in music play-back and I am very satisfied with its performance. Anyway, you can find a review on the C542 at www.audioenz.co.nz. Hope this helps.  :)

I just won an ebay auction for one of the NEC drives ($10.50!).  I will let you know my thoughts when I get it.

Sure thing Ray!  :D

I should be getting the C542 within this week. By the way, where did you hear about the C542i? There is no info about the CDP on the NAD website.

I thought I read it on the site, maybe transposed the 542. I'm told it's about $500.
