The audio industry lost an icon today as Jim Thiel of Thiel Audio has passed away.

Wow, I hate to hear that.  I was just noe replying to a pm and noted that my first real entry into high end audio (not counting Advents back in college days) was with Thiel CS2.2's and then 3.6's.  I recall having to replace a tweeter and receiving a new replacement + solder from Thiel for free, no questions asked, even though I made clear to Jim that I was the 2nd owner!  Great gentleman and great speaker designer--just really a classy guy and company.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and employees.

Absolutely terrible news.  He leaves an incredible legacy in the products he designed.

I live a few miles from Lexington, but surprisingly haven't found anything in the local paper.  A friend took the tour of the Thiel facilities a few years back and was very impressed.  Almost ended up going to work there.  Condolences.

JT's current 3.6's (pictured above) got long and glowing reviews from Wes Phillips and Anthony Cordesman.  Phillips said they may be the last speaker he ever owns.  Or, maybe it was Cordesman.  They are 12k.  At that, he still priced them under all the SOTA nearly full range speakers around today.  I say nearly full range cause they won't do but about 20Hz in the bass.  Don't get me started.  One of the proven designers of speakers like Vandersteen who at one time was probably his biggest competitor and vice versa.  One of the good guys.

Actually they are the 3.7s, the same as in my main system

Sad day indeed.  I've never met or spoken to the man but I certainly fell in love with his speakers the first time I heard them (3.5's which unfortunately I couldn't afford).  Maybe some used 3.6's now...

James, nice setup; me very jealous...
