Super Tower /R Rehab program
« on: 17 Sep 2009, 04:01 pm »
Hello again,

I am in the process of refinishing/refoaming the towers I just got. (see the VMPS possible new owner thread.)

I am getting close to having these done, but had a question regarding the crossover/wiring.
The low end wiring comes off the crossover + and - into the 12", then is wired straight from the 12" to the 15" woofer.  There is a white resistor? glued on to the 12" just before the connection.

Do the 12" and 15" actives need to be connected separately to the crossover for them to receive the proper freq???

Keep in mind I know next to nothing about crossover design, I just want to make sure that the previous owners didn't decide to alter the design in some way.  I can provide pictures if that helps.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Bryan

This seems correct.  The woofers are wired in parallel. The positive wire goes to the resistor on the (+) of the 12" as well as the (+) of the 15".  The negative wire to both (-) of the 12" and 15".  Be sure the resistor is connected between the (+) terminal of the 12" and the positive wire.

Thanks!

That's exactly how it is.  Looks like I'm in good shape.

Just a couple quick update pics.  I hope I don't offend any VMPS loyalists with the stain color, had to match the bar downstairs.
I ended up just patching the tops, they don't look perfect by any means, but I think they are much better than before.  Lots of sanding and buffing.
Still have one more coat of finish, then wax.
Still waiting on the 15" PR foams, then I'll be done.

Thanks for everyone's help here.

Great Job!!   :thumb:

Reminds me of the first time I hear that very speaker at a well known salon here in Los Angeles.

After listening to them as long as we wanted, we were taken into a room with the big Goldmunds and the Watt Puppies on each end.

Neither was able to get it any better than the Super Towers played at the same level.

Hey all,

Just thought I'd show them finished up and installed in the basement.  Thanks again for the help.

I'm still on the lookout for a good amp, they are a bit underpowered right now, but a big upgrade from the Cerwins I had going!

Looks Great. :thumb:

Makes me wish I still had my Drum Kit.

What amp are you using now?

Thanks!
I am just using a H/K AVR 254 receiver...65 watts @8 ohms.  It's all I have right now.   It's right on the bottom of the power spectrum for the towers.  Looking for something in the 150 watt range.

Also, it's never too late to pick up the sticks again, although they do take up a lot of room.

You did a nice job  :thumb: I drive mine with around 300 watts a side....the woofers suck power, regardless of the speakers rating (91db...?).
For setup: Toe in is very important....you should just see the inside edge of the rear of the cabinet from you seat, as you site down the side of the box.

Thanks Dave!

Just curious, you have 300wpc, is that at 8ohms or 4?
I'm working on placement, I think I may end up moving my electronics to the middle and spacing the speakers a bit further apart.  We'll see how it goes.

I use an Onkyo M-504 which is rated (165 watts@8ohm) as my amp most of the time. I have also in the past used a Krell KSA-250 (250 watts@8ohm) and my Rogue Audio M-120 Magnum tube monos (120 watts @8/4 ohms)

I use my Supertowers 95% hometheater, and use my Apogee speaker system for music....I have two systems setup in one room.

My normal VMPS setup is an Onkyo 805 surround receiver running center/sides/rears, Onkyo M-504 pushing the Supertowers, and another Onkyo M-504 pushing a pair of VMPS subs.

Thanks for the info.   That gives me a good idea of where I need to be for wattage.
Which, of the 3 amps, do you prefer for the Supertowers?

Well, the Krell is the best on the Supertowers...although the Onkyo is fine IMO. I guess it depends on what you use them for? (in your case music)...and how loud you like to listen.

Something along this line would be great:

I like Dave's list (especially  ATI, Aragon, and Parasound) and to that I would add:

ADCOM
EarthQuake CineNova
Harman Kardon CITATION (vintage)
CARVER (vintage)
Sunfire

and if you can afford the newer amps:

NuFORCE
Wyred 4 Sound

300wpc at 4 ohms or more should take them to a very high perfromance level if all drivers are operating properly.

I would tend to categorize the older amps as "smoother/richer" and the newer suggestions as more "dynamic and detailed".

Great info guys.   I've got my eyes open.  I need a bit more cash in hand to get what I want/need.  Hopefully by the end of the year I'll have something.

Thanks again for the help!
