Taking Woodstock, plus a music trivia question

I would call this a fun "B" movie.  I had issues with director Ang Lee pushing his own points to humanize the masses at Woodstock, but it was a different take.  My favorite role was the actor who played Michael Lang, one of the promoters.
After viewing this film last week, I was interested in looking over the music again, and found that
I had either forgotten, or completely never "got" that The Band played at Woodstock.  Now for you music historians, I want to know why, in both the movie and the soundtrack, The Band, was
completely gone.  Was it money differences from their record company, Capitol Records, their manager (wasn't it that sleazebag, who also managed Dylan and Peter, Paul, and Mary...Albert Grossman), or The Band themselves?  Also, if you enjoy the dinosaur bands, there is a dvd called 'Festival Express', which though uneven, shows some great footage of bands from this era, on a train in Canada.
