Questions about Denon 5900 and SACD
« on: 2 Jan 2004, 06:28 am »
The promo blurb for this machine mentions..."Adjustable delay time and Channel Levels (DSD signals are converted to PCM for this feature)".

Does this mean that DSD -> PCM in all the channels (including fronts) if the delay feature is used for a multichannel SACD, thus reducing the SACD playback to nothing more than a multichannel PCM recording? Or does this conversion occur only in the channels that are "delayed?"

Does this mean that the only way to actually hear true DSD playback (even on multichannel SACD's) is to enable source direct mode for SACD play? Does that SourceDirect mode render all multichannel SACD's to stereo? Will multichannel SACD's still playback as true (multichannel) DSD as long as the delay feature is left disengaged?

I'm confused.

i havnt actually looked into it but it means that there is only one dsd processor so in order to compute delay for dsd it must convert it to pcm

the 2900 doesnt feature delay at all for dsd though it does it for dvda.

so this makes sense somewhat they decided to include delay instead with the 5900 instead of nothing at all... i guess it was a cost desision.

As I understand it, Sony will not allow any other mfg'er to access their chips that allow manipulation to remain DSD.
