If someone wanted to get me a boxed set for my birthday this Thursday I would be happy with the stereo versions.

Wayne

My birthday is on Friday and I'm leaving nothing to chance. I've already confirmed that I will be able to pick up the stereo set, I've preordered, first thing tommorrow when my local CD emporium opens at 10am.

Thanks Levi! I'm a firm believer in a birthmonth, you can get in a lot more celebrating that way. My grand finale is a trip to RMAF.  :banana piano:
The Beatles will have to wait.

Target might be throwing in a $5 gift cert if you buy at least 2 of the Beatles discs at a crack also

Yep....for every two you buy...a $5.00 Target gift card (its in their weekly ad)...and the Cd's are priced at $11.98 (single ones).

They open at 8AM ....my first stop.

They did a good job engineering the old to the new.  Lots of resolution.  I have the stereo box set.  I can safely say I have them all.  :thumb:

Hah...this week's Village Voice has an article heralding the arrival of these box sets, while bemoaning the Ipod/MP3 trend...
Quote
A pox upon you, foul device. Inelegant cudgel of social status, haughty impediment to casual subway conversation, harbinger of tinnitus, obliterator of superior fidelity. On Wednesday, a great many thousands of Beatlemaniacs will shell out in the neighborhood of $600 for two box sets of extravagantly remastered records they probably already own, rip those suckers to iTunes-type computer programs, and blast them on iPod-type portable MP3 players through earbuds (overpriced at $30 or so) that render the sonic differences between the old stuff, the new stereo stuff, and the new mono stuff thoroughly negligible....Oh, brows will furrow, eyes squint, and migraines arise amid those who struggle to hear the difference anyway, straining desperately to detect something warmer, fuller, clearer, grittier, sharper, punchier, etc., etc. Which doesn't mean that that sort of thing isn't there?just that 40-plus years of improved technology have led us, paradoxically, to such alleged innovations as the disdainful 128-bitrate MP3, the sonic equivalent of pressing your ear to the wall to hear the band playing next door. You have to admire the Beatles-industrial-complex's restraint in waiting so long for the gala, full-catalog remaster roll-out to smite forever the original 1987 CD versions that everyone hates.

Its a fun read, pretty ironic I say.
Check it out.

Having read all the hoopula lately about these reissued recordings, I dare say I am tempted to finally buy my one and only Beatles album(s).
Yeah, I can hear them now...you mean you don't have any Beatles albums? Nope, but some of their music are in my brain somewhere, I hear them sometimes.

That is a actually a great value for what you get.  At $180 you are getting it $4 cheaper than what I paid for. :)  $4 now that is one-way subway fare and you have left over change to buy a coke!

I can just grabbed all 14 albums from Target for $150 after tax and getting $35 in Target gift cards.

Is the box set worth another $30-40 over buying the individual cd's?

I really don't care that much about the packaging, but if it is really good and cool, maybe I would spend the extra bucks.

Just looking for some opinions...

Thanks,

George

I don't think the QuickTime movies are on the individual (stereo) disks. Are they?

No they are not.  But I am decluttering so I vote for individual stereo disc (not getting all of them cuz some early ones sound as good with Doc Ebbetts needledrops IMO, and are really best listened to in mono anyway...again IMHO)

Since my discs have gone to the hard drive immediately I am less interested in the artwork, etc. anyway.  With at least 10 Beatles collector books (including the bible, Lewisohn's book) I, for one, am much more interested in the recording quality.

Now...to finalize my time before I die.. :D  Beatles in 24/192 mono and 2 channel, and 5.1 surround, and the release of Let It Be movie on Blu-Ray (I sold my LIB laserdisc years ago for good $$ but stupidly never made a tape backup!!!   :duh: :duh: ).

Well I just finished ripping all the albums and selected Abbey Road for my maiden voyage...all I can say is "JOB WELL DONE!!".   :thumb:

If the other remasters are this good, it will have been $150 very well spent.

Think of the previous albums (even the MFSL or EA versions) as being faded photos and the remasters as having been brought back to life and cleaned up.  Thankfully, they didn't try to over-sharpen or over-color things and create a new version.
