Beatlemania....2009
« on: 6 Sep 2009, 08:58 am »
Found an interesting article on line....a listening session concerning the new Beatle remasters to be released 9-9-09.

Spared no expense with their system....(Wilson's... :shake: )

Quote
There may be no better way to find out than by assembling a small group of Beatles fanatics and listening to the new CDs on a $120,000 stereo system in the showcase room of Audio Consultants in Evanston. The panel settled into comfortable chairs and prepared to be wowed by what would come out of those $26,000 Wilson Audio speakers via the $25,000 DCS CD player, the $36,000 Ayre Acoustics pre-amp and amplifier and the $35,000 Transparent Audio cables. No, we can't guarantee similar results at home.

Here's your story link...... :thumb:

This is a good info.  I pre-ordered several Beatles Re-master 2009 CDs a week ago :thumb:

And a counterpoint.... link

Went to Wal-Mart last night but no go (some are reporting early shelf life at some Wal-Marts and a few Starbucks).  Although I've ordered my "must haves" thought I'd try to pick up a few more.  :)

Hopefully, I'm not the only dummy that doesn't know this. But if you've got a 2 ch system, what's the best way to listen to mono recordings?

Thanks,

Gene

True mono recordings will show you whether your speakers are positioned correctly.  Sit in the sweet spot (middle of triangle hopefully) and make sure the mono sound is a pretty tight image centered between the speakers.  Toe in or out until the image is focused the best.  Could also be a need to move one speaker fwd or back relative to your listening chair.

Net/net, listening to mono takes no real equipment changes except for speaker placement if too vaguely presented.  Once positioned your stereo will sound 1000% better too.

Thanks Ted.

Not to get too off-track, but I've got a PS Audio phono preamp that has a Mono button and in fact I've got some crummy old vinyl that was recorded in Mono.

What would that do?

No, don't do anything, just listen to them in stereo mode....they are already mono.

I will be at Best Buy to get a few on Wednesday.  How many times have I replaced my existing versions?

The eintire set is coming out in a boxed edition..I had several on pre-order, cancelled and will wait for the entire collection.

Also not to hijak the thread but Elton Johns early stuff is also being re-mastered, I have 3 of these and they are nicely done

Alex,
?  The boxed sets are also this Wed, not later (stereo set available everywhere and limited edition mono sold out most locations but EMI says more will be available soon).  These boxed sets are what everyone has reviewed.

I'm guessing you will have to replace your Beatles catalog only one more time after this release based on the article in Tape Op.

"The re-mastering process commenced with an extensive period conducting tests before finally copying the analogue master tapes into the digital medium. When this was completed, the transfer was achieved using a Pro Tools workstation operating at 24 bit 192 kHz resolution..."

I have the mono set on order with Elusive Disc.  They sent an email saying that the mono sets are not going to be numbered editions as originally advertised.  It's no big deal to me, but I thought any monophiles out there might like to know before laying out the long green$.

How much is everyone paying for the Box sets?  That's all the 13 remastered 2009 CDs and some goodies for $184 at Borders.  :)

That's a good price.  Lowest i've seen is Amazon.CA at $189.99 CA$  or about $177 US (and confirmed via Hoffman's forum pricewatch thread that is now at part 5!!  Like 200 pages; the discussion forum is on to part 21 or over 1000 pages!!).

Mono or Stereo, which version to buy? With a little help from our friends at NPR you can listen to samples of the mono and stereo versions of "Getting Better", "She's Leaving Home", and "I'm Only Sleeping".

If someone wanted to get me a boxed set for my birthday this Thursday I would be happy with the stereo versions.
