Salk HT3 and Odyssey Amps and Pre Amps
« on: 29 Aug 2009, 05:41 pm »
Hello,

Anyone using Odyssey amp / preamp combo with Salk Speakers especially the HT3? I am very interested in these amplifiers and from what I read they seem like the represent great value.

Any thoughts or opinions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

I am using a Stratos with double tranny, caps, etc.  with the HT3's.  Would I recommend this combo? yes.  I use an Audio Refinement Pre-5 for a preamp but I would love to try a tube pre including the Candela.

Glad to see I'm not the only one running this combo!  While Jim was building my HT3's I was checking Agon for used amps based on everyone saying huge power was required to push the HT3's.  I'm very glad my Stratos Extreme SE does a fantastic job IMO.  I'm still using my Marantz SR7002 as the pre while I try to find something to match up with the Odyssey.  I had used a Candela, but it didn't like the HT bypass as I had a lot of background noise.  I'm now looking for a tube pre that does not invert absolute phase.  BAT is leading the pack right now.

Again, my Stratos does great and I have no plans to upgrade until I can afford a Pass, BAT, Bel Canto Ref1000MKII, Spectron, etc.

My setup is 2 channel only without any intention of using home theater. Do you know why the Candela was introducing background noise. Was it a set up issue? Interesting because usually manufacturers have good synergy with their product line when used together.

I went through everything, and had components running on separate 20A lines.  I tried to root cause the issue and the Red X came back as the pre.  It sounded good, but had too much audible hiss from the listening position on low passages in the music.

Klaus makes some great stuff and was a pleasure to deal with.  I still have my Stratos and Khartago mono's running strong, but I'm aware of a couple others having similar issues with their Candela.  It was a great sounding unit though when I was able to look past the "hiss"

I have been using a pair of HT3's for the past four months. They have seen time with Mono Extremes SE, Khartago and SL-RG1 amps driven through a Candela preamp. Source units to include phono preamp/VPI Aries2/SME-310 combo, Marantz SA11-S1, Wadia 170i transport. There is complete synergy and ample power with any of these amps.

Yes,  I've heard several Salks with our amps,  and it was always very good.  However,  I never heard any of these systems with the Extremes and at length as with Alex's system,  of course.

IT IS FREAKING AMAZING !!!!!!!!!
Alex is right,  it just fits all together.
