Progressive Metal (no growling)

Here's a link to a thread for those of you who are into the heavier stuff, but can't stand the "cookie monster" growling vocals or the incessant double bass drum thumping that inevitable accompanies this kind of music.

Definitely some lesser known bands listed there for those of you who are looking for something a bit different, but there's also the obvious mention of bands like Dream Theater and Tool and such.

Enjoy,
Bob

Thanks Bob,

I think that there is some fantastically interesting stuff going on in metal these days.

My faves of late are Sunn 0))), sometimes referred to as sludge metal. Their new album is fabulous. Super slow, no lightning riffs here. And a major workout for any system's lower end.

Also a big fan of a band called Baroness from Georgia. Lil bit of a Southern flavor, and a great set of songs.

Good to see another Sunn O))) fan!   It's regressive metal if anything, and maybe not even metal... heh! Actually I am not sure what you call one drone that goes on for 10 minutes.  Although I shan't expound on Sunn's virtues further as they have nothing to do with progressive metal.  Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled progressive metal thread.

Never heard of Sunn 0))).  Might have to check them out.

I am hit and miss with a lot of prog metal bands, and yes I do no like cookie monster vocals.

Porcupine Tree (not metal), DT and Tool are my staples of the genre and there are some honorables mentions with Fates Warning, Aghora, Sceptic's Universe.  Rush I don't consider metal either but way up there in the prog (hard)rock category.

Josh - are you going to the PT concert on September 24th at Terminal 5 (Kings X as backup)? Topround and I will be there. It's general admission so if you get a ticket now we can all meet up beforehand.

Sounds like fun!  I'll have to check the schedule but off the top of my head, I think I am free.
