Rubber VS foam
« on: 24 Aug 2009, 10:43 pm »
I am helping a friend with a pair of Fried satellites and found the surrounds tore. After looking at them I noticed they were foam. The question is should I go back with foam or should I change them out to rubber cause I feel that rubber will last a lot longer.
What advice can you give me?

Thanks in advance

Don

If you have the option to replace them with rubber instead of foam, I think that would be the way to go.  Do you have a source for rubber surrounds?  If so, I'd really appreciate knowing where to find them.

You didn't mention how large the tear in the surround was, because if the problem is a simple tear and not the result of "foam rot," it is often pretty easy to repair.

The "new" foam surrounds are quite an improvement over the older formulations that would fall apart after a decade or so. I should point out that the "rubber" surrounds also have problems, with work hardening and splitting over time, not to mention that the foam has a certain amount of edge damping that terminates standing waves on the cone itself.

I would recommend replacing foam surrounds with the "new" foam surrounds.

Best Regards,

Well the answer came back today and turns out I can only get the surrounds in foam. My source came from a great guy in Raleigh, NC called "The Analog Store". Alex is a good guy and let me know that he would try and help anyone looking for surrounds or any other parts.
His # 919-787-7227 and www.theanalogstore.com.
Thanks for the input Wind Chaser and TerryO
