A wonder to listen to
« on: 22 Aug 2009, 05:07 am »
I am not really an audio hobby kind of guy, I just know what I like. I like Dannys stuff.

I completed building Danny's non servo sub with the PR a week or so ago. Nothing really special building it, 1 3/4" front and back 1" sides. The speaker and PR on the front and the Apex senior with the GR research mod from Apex on the back. No Rez inside. The volume is 2.44 cu ft per Danny. The front barely fits under the entertainment center centered under the tv, just 13" tall.  3-AV3's across the front to give you an idea of the rest. I listen to a mixture of HT and a variety of music I like.

What made me think to drop this note was I happened to be in Fry's Electronics today and they had some ~6' tall Martin Logans with a huge sub of some sort and a lot of bass coming from somewhere. It was hard to tell what they were playing, it was probably supposed to be music but I really couldn't tell you what it was.

All I could think of when I heard it was, that it sounded like crap, something that maybe belonged in the Bose room with the door closed. :) I thought the ML's were supposed to be decent so it surprised me. I don't really know the buzz words but mud comes to mind or  that it sounded like it was coming from some kids car a block away. Just BOOM BOOM BOOM and no clue what it was supposed to be, maybe thunder from 10 miles away, listening with a pillow over your ears. There was nothing really to even remember about the vocals or instruments, all muddy. Hopefully that gives you the idea. It was bad.

Then I got home and played a few songs I like, cause it got me thinking about my new sub, Saving Grace, Angel, some RL Burnside that sort of stuff with a few Janis Joplin, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac tracks and the like for good measure.  You probably get the idea, stuff I like. :)

Dannys sub and speakers are just so clear and not really anywhere you can place the speakers, except the sound is so much more complete. Close your eyes and you have no clue where anything is except the vocalist or instruments on a stage somewhere, kind of sound. The sub and AV3's are indistinguishable to me sound wise, no way for me to tell where one stops and the other starts. I am definitely not a critical listener but it sounded damn good.

And this is his sub and mtm's before he came out with the really really "good" servo sub and N3s.   :D
I thought this was worth posting since it's my understanding that the servo version shares some attributes but is "better yet" though honestly better is pretty hard to imagine for me. I see the N3's are even better than the AV3's, also hard to imagine.

Seems to me we are all very fortunate that people like Danny share their talents so more of us can enjoy really good sounds.

Anyway I am a very happy listener and thought I would share a little of my happiness.

Thanks

I have decided to follow Danny,
I have decided to drink the coolaid,
I have decided everybody else sucks (especially those products at the big box stores)
No turning back,
No turning back.

...yeah, I had a similar experience. It's hard to believe that people want that sound, the question is, if the people who want/like that sound (along with the pimped out looks of the speakers) would like or want the sound of a good speaker? (i.e. GR Sub) I don't know.

... Not quite sure what to think of the above post  but I think it is complimentary to GR-Research designs...

I know exactly where you are coming from.  I have a friend who has invested heavily with his HT system and has a dedicated room.  He has Mirage speakers that sound quite nice but he uses a really really cheap subwoofer.  I've been trying to convince him to build one of Danny's servo subs and he thinks his current subwoofer sounds fine.  These guys get really turned on by name brand speakers from dealers .

The short version is that a not so good sub can make even decent speakers like the ML's sound bad. Bad stuff should be kept in a room with the door closed so as not to damage our ears. :)

A good sub matched to speakers is a multiplier in quality, not just additive. The sub I built,  I thought Danny matched well to the AV3's I have.  Thats a different way of saying what I meant if that helps.

And yes I meant it to be very complimentary to GR designs. Sorry if it wasn't as clear as it could have been. I'm still happy though!!!

Just looked at Danny's website and I don't see the sub (or any sub kits) you're referring to.  Can you point me in the right direction for more information?

Thanks.

I think that might be a retired design. The shift to servo subs seems to be the new product Danny is selling.

Maybe referring to the SW-12B with SW-12A PR?

This was the 12B and PR12A, I think Danny may have sold out of them now and I got one of the last of the older non servo versions. TomS's link is correct. I have had the parts and been building it on and off for quite a while.

From what I read here the new one is even better. And the impression I got is that it still matches the rest of Dannys drivers.
