Experience with a Rega P5?
« on: 21 Aug 2009, 10:55 pm »
Anyone here have any experience with a Rega P5 with the added regulated power supply option? This table is on recommended lists (I know big deal) and has received great reviews. The P5 is supposed to be an upgrade from the P25 anniversary table.

Here is the kicker> Which is better the P5 or a full Monty KAB SL1200?

I've never listened trough a 'full Monty' 1200 but I really like the Rega lineup (P3 and above) to the point that I can't imagine you going wrong. With that being said is there any way you can listen to both rigs with your own ears ?

Thanks for your insight. No I can't listen to either.
There are enough testimonials out there on both.
I have read them all. Most not too recent on AA board.
I had a Rega 3 awhile ago and it was good. I have had Rega arms for some time now on various tables too. That 700 arm is supposed to be very good. It is on the 5 and the 7 tables.

If it matters the P5 and Scout were both rated "B" tables in this past April Stereophile Recommended Components list.

No Rega people here? Hmmm what a shame because these tables just sound very, very good. I went with the Rega P5. Getting bored I needed a change from my Basis 1400/Rb300 combo I have had for awhile now. I have had a P3 many moons ago with the RB300 Arm it was enjoyable and kept your attention.

I looked at and originally wanted the KAB Technics 1210, then a VPI Scout, and finally the Rega series in particular the P5 and P7.  All of them got great reviews and been around for quite some time now. The audiophile in me chose the P5 (used) with the optional TT PS and  eliminated the KAB Technics. The VPI upgrade path does not and has never turned me on.  I had a HW19 MKIII, this no matter what the tables sound like afterwards with upgrades always translated to big bucks. Figuring in the costs of the upgrades even over time you can have a much better table to begin with by just  re-selling the VPI and even buying another VPI someone else upgraded. The best way to buy VPI is used and partially loaded. This upgrading is a turn off for me and others too I have read.

The light weight P5 has a liveliness, and tone correctness that translates to a very satisfying experience especially for the cost. This table "boogies!"It does have that over used term PRAT. Yes, and more so than with the Basis 1400. Piano is some of the best I have heard on the P5 no doubt because of the external regulated PS. The VPI with out regulation did not get piano very good. It would cost $1G to fix that buying the STS.
I'm using my Dynavector 10X5 and it is a nice match for a super easy setup. I was surprised using 2 of  2mm spacers it was right on sound wise and set up wise. NO messing with it. In fact I don't know if I can stand not messing with anything on this table. One other thing mentioned in the reviews. There is "astonishingly" little groove noise. This must be to the credit of the RB700 arm.It is actually intriguing that this table is capable of all this.

As I have read and agree for now, the Rega P5 is a package as is and should not be upgraded by any of the after market upgrades they have out there which might change the original Rega intended sound. So be it for awhile. From the start of this if I didn't like it I would just turn it around and re-sell it. But for now it stays and is a recommended listen to anyone looking in the price class. It is a very engaging table. As usual my dsclaimer, YMMV!

I have a P25/Dynavector 20Xl and have been using a Nottingham Wave Mechanic.  It is a fantastic combo.  It gets all the "flat-earth" stuff right, and the Wave Mechanic is a tremendous upgrade, it plays rock-solid stable and pitch-correct.  (Alas I'm upgrading and the combo, not including the cartridge, will be soon for sale..)

My only bitch about any Rega was the "weak" motor. I'm used to powerful motors such as found in the Empire, VPI or Technics, but my P3 was a wimp. I couldn't brush the record on the  platter as it would stall out. The arms, on the other hand are magnificent!

They are cool looking turntables.

Wayne, The motor is much improved (more torque) in the newer P5 & P7 models and quieter than the VPI motors I've had experience with.

My carbon fiber brush is not a problem at all.

I may be after the Groovetracer Counter weight.

Very good then. That was my only complaint about the table. I am in the market for a new table. perhaps I will eye up the P7

On my list is the Avid Diva II, the VPI Classic and perhaps now the P7, and also could consider a VPI scoutmaster II. The P5 is an excellent value for only $1400. I could save some money and buy more vinyl!

How do you save money by spending it

Just daydreaming

Love the P5!  I got hear hear it with the separate PS last year when I was auditioning tables.  I preferred the P5 over the various Project and Music Hall tables I was able to compare it to.  The bass seemed much tighter on the P5 than the others while we compared with Pretty Hate Machine.  Off the top of my head, I think I lloked at:

Pro-Ject Debut III w/ Sumiko Pearl
Rega P2 with Sumiko Pearl
Pro-Ject RM-5 or 6.1 w/ Sumiko Blue Point
Rega P5 w/ Benz (can't remember which)
Music Hall MMF5.1

In order to stay within budget, I went with a P3 with a Denon DL160 cart.  Plan to get the PS eventually.  I kep forgetting to pick up my Herbie's Way Cool TT Mat as well.   :duh:

Enjoy the P5!   :thumb:
