How many Heartless Bastards Bands are there?
« on: 21 Aug 2009, 06:18 pm »
I am confused. The Heartless Bastards are coming to my town, and I thought they were the back up band for James McMurtry, but???
Now I think there are other bands.
James McMurtry and the Heartless Bastards
Had to include this link just for the fun of it.

Tom Petty and the Heartless Bastards,
and the solo, and quite distinct Heartless Bastards.
Whew, didn't know so many bands wanted that name.  At least there is the one and only
Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash! :D

"The Heartless Bastards" are a modern rock band, from Austin iirc.  They are ok.

Never heard of James McMurtry.  And I thought it was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

At least two. Wikipedia them to clear a little confusion. They aren't the band James McMurtry used on "Live at Aught-three" though. That's a different bunch of Heartless Bastards.

Right you are Josh.
I got that from the Wiki post on the band
"According to Wennerstrom, the name of the band comes from a question on a Mega Touch trivia quiz game at a bar. A question asked the name of Tom Petty's backing band, and one of the options was "Tom Petty and the Heartless Bastards." She thought it was funny, and used it when she later formed a band."
Wennerstrom from the band, Heartless Bastards.
James McMurtry is the son of the well known author, Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove), and is a very competent Austin/Texas type player.  So, so vocalist, and above average lyricist.
Here is a cut of his, Choctaw Bingo, without the band, solo guitar.

But I always liked Seminole Bingo (Warren Zevon) performed by David Lindley.

If you have the time, Josh, love your feedback on those two.

Both quite good.  I especially like the guitar playing.  I love slide guitar too, like Lindley.

I was wondering if Lindley was the guy I saw at one of the blues music festivals in Portland, Oregon many years back.  My dad and I use to go to those.  A long weekend on the river in Portland with tons of blues acts.  That was the first I had heard of Kelly Joe  Phelps.
