Help with UPS dilemma
« on: 21 Aug 2009, 03:20 pm »
I got my Rockets sold and naturally UPS damaged the speakers.

So now I am faced with a real quandry.  I insured the each speaker for $600.  However, they are likely to take the damaged speaker and leave me with one good speaker.

Has anyone ever been able to argue that the speakers are a pair and hold them accountable for both even though one package was ok?

I'm just trying to figure out what the best path forward is.  I think it might be to get impared value and salvage the networks.  Keep my buyer whole and try to avoid loosing even more money.  What a shame!!!

Danny I hope it's ok to post this in your circle.  Doesn't fit anywhere real well and they did have your kick butt networks in them...

Man, I'm really sorry to see that - such a beautiful pair of speakers.

Here is what I would do:

get all the insurance you can from UPS and then sell the pair as scratch and dent for a reduced price.  I assume they still sound fine and the damage is purely cosmetic?  If so, there are many guys like me who love high end audio and cannot afford what our ears desire.  We'll go with some cosmetic damage to achieve sonic bliss

a couple of examples:

-- I built GR Research AV2s from some cabinets I found on craigslist.  The cabs were designed for AV2 specs, but had a healthy 1" dent in the bottom edge.   The dent is a bummer, but I got the cabs for a song and now have incredible speakers.

-- I bought a heavily dented rotel RB980bx power amp.  Functions perfectly, but looks like hell.  $100 for a decent mid level power amp.

anyway, the damage is tragic, but you might do well in the end.

Is it just that corner in the photo that is damaged? If that is a gloss black top, I think this link from the av123 forum may show you how to repair that. Even if its not going to be completely repaired, it could be made to look a lot better.

You should be able to use bondo glazing putty available all over instead of the specialty stuff they are talking about on that link.

Good luck!

Any chance the damaged cap can be taken off and replaced with a new one.

This one is easy.  I had a cracked baffle on an OB7...custom pair from Response Audio.  He insured each separately.  Demand that UPS not take the speaker from the home...they are not supposed to keep it.  They are supposed to have it picked up to be inspected and then returned.  What happens is, they 'lose' the speaker.  Demand that they come out to your home to take photos or that you take pics yourself and email them in...that's what I did.  You should be able to keep the speakers and get reimbursed.

Sorry you have to deal with this, though.  Just be very clear it is not to leave or be picked up.  They will try to pick it up even if you arrange to have someone come out and take pictures.
