Found a cool tool
« on: 20 Aug 2009, 10:36 pm »
Just a fun anecdote reall, nothing more.

I was trying to solder some internal speaker leads onto some solid copper binding posts and finding that my 250 watt American Beauty resistance soldering station just couldn't get things hot enough within it's duty cycle limits.  I was looking for a better solution to the problem and remembered that my dad had given me one of those old, giant Weller pistol grip soldering guns with the tungsten tips and headlights.  He had given it to his father back in the 60s sometime and when my grandfather left this world, my dad gave it to me.  Aside from a bit of light corrosion on the outside of the metal case, it appeard to be in great shape.  When I opened it I found a brand new tool -- it had never been used, was still shiny with the power cord coiled up as it came from the factory, the assortment of tips, the wrench for changing tips, etc.  A fully NOS soldering gun. :D

Anyway, a little flux paste, some high copper content solder, and about 45 seconds of the big soldering gun and no more problem with the heavy copper posts.

This is definitely the best solution to soldering binding posts like this that I have found.

Nice score!

I have a 140watt pistol grip style soldering gun for heavier work. It still takes its time with binding posts though.

I have one of these I've had since the 70's and it was old then. It is just the ticket for big binding posts and other heat sucking chunks of metal. I hope it never dies though the head lamp bulbs were broken long ago. Finding that you have a NOS version complete with family ties is way cool.

I'll give you $10 for it.  aa :icon_twisted:

Just kidding Jim. That's a really nice tool. Something to be proud of. The unit I had was twice my age when it died. A sad day indeed.  :(

Ok....I'll give you $20.

Bob, that's mighty generous of you, but I think I'll pass :-).

Yeah, my dad's is as old as this one but has been through the wars -- and looks it, but is still functioning well even if it is held together by epoxy and duct tape :D.

One thing that really surprised me was that the power cord was still nice and soft and pliable -- not stiff and cracking.

It's a keeper for sure.
