I think that is the key feature for most people. For 20% of the retail price of the Transporter, you should now be able to stream 24/96 files without having a noisy computer in the same room as your system.

The touch screen might be able to work on a lower voltage then the old display, thus negating the need for some of the internal switching supplies of the SB3 and Transporter. It just might be a bit quieter electrically.

The description was removed from the New Zealand site a few hours after I posted the link.

Unfortunately, my R&D budget has been severely restricted from the past year.

If someone wishes to send me one for evaluation, I would be willing to work with them on any mods I come up with.

Most anything ripped from DVD-V (like Neil Young Live at Massey Hall, etc.); and hundreds of DVD-A titles have 24/96 2 channel layers.  In addition, sites like Blue Coast and HDTracks are chock full of 24/96.

First I heard of this, but it sure looks like a winner.  Is this intended to replace the SB3?  Unless they cut the price greatly on the SB3 it seems to me this will cannibalize its sales. 

Any idea when it will go on sale in the States?

The Sqeezebox Touch was announced today.  Apparently a handful have already been shipped by retail outlets to customers by mistake, but the software isn't finished, so the launch date in the US isn't expected until some time in December.

For the audiophile, native 24/96 playback may be the biggest draw.  It will also have the ability to run a trimmed-down version of the server, taking content from either an attached USB drive or an SD card.  Missing from the trimmed down server will be a web interface and the ability to do transcoding of non-native file formats.

Looks like you have a bit longer to wait.  Maybe Wayne could find one at an online retailer that has jumped the gun and have mods waiting for the general release in December.  The SB3 is being discontinued.

Looks like a winner.

This guy sure looks the part.

- USB slot
- SD/SDHC card slot (up to 32 GB)
- 4.3" color LCD touch screen
- Native hardware support (no upsampling) up to 24/96 including 88.2k (yes) .... and it natively passes 24/96 through its digi outs. Very nice!

It appears that the Touch can act as a server so a USB drive plugged into the Touch, and running a scaled down squeezecenter (called Tiny Squeezecenter), will allow one to bypass having to run a computer as the server (need a computer to setup initially however).

Further, the Touch can also serve your music files, by acting as a simple NAS drive, to any other Squeezebox device (less SB1 and SB2).

The touch can also work traditionally as part of a computer server setup.

This is VERY exciting news!
