I never lose interest altogether but do find myself gravitating towards one style of music over others. This is a cyclical thing for me. I'll go from mostly jazz to mostly vocals to mostly blues, etc. I'll pretty much make the rounds, concentrating mostly on one specific genre at a time. This is not a conscious decision. I just go with the flow as needed.

(nathanm -)

same here, I'll focus on one band within a genre too

Browntrout,

Everyone needs a break now and then. Sometimes it's better not to question why. Just let it go for a while and it will call you back when you are ready. You will enjoy it even more.

Try one or two of the following :

Take a vacation.
Turn the computer off for a week.  :o (If I were a betting man, I would wager it all that this is the root of the problem. Check your email if it's important, but stay off of the internet for a week. Seriously.  :thumb:)
Spend some quality time with people that you like.
Spend some time outdoors doing something that you enjoy. (How 'bout fishing without an i-pod.)
Catch up on chores that are long overdue.
Catch up on chores that are long overdue.
Catch up on chores that are long overdue.

Did I mention . . . . . ?

Ben, Maybe you need some digital in your life. Having to swap out all those records so often  would wear on anybody. Jeezz..... Something like a SqueezeBox would make things so much easier and less tedious.

If I get in a situation where listening to music does not sound good to me I find that dragging out some different equipment and putting together another system helps most of the time.  If that doesn't do it I will get out some drivers and my Rane 3 way xover and try some new combinations searching for something to give me a spark.  Pulling out a favorite cd by SRV or Joe Bonamassa on the new rig seems to work for me.

Not a bad idea Bob. When he gets back from his Sabbatical he can explore the world of internet radio. My music collection took on quite a few pounds after I got my Duet.

Thank you for "taking my side" in what has the potential to escalate into a heated debate of digital being better than vinyl.

But yea, seriously, not that streaming audio from a SqueezeBox/Duet has much quality, there's always an entire world out there just waiting to be explored.
I often listen to the various (low quality) music channels offered by the satellite company when my musical horizons need expanded.
I can see where Ben is coming from. There have been a few times when I think, "Is all of this really worth it". But inevitably something will spark it back to life for me. Most of the time it's due to new tunes, or tunes that I forgot I have. Without going into specific numbers, I've got quite a bit that's available to me at the touch of a button (SB3 and or Duet). It seems that occasionally I'll find myself getting into a rut and will play the same dozen artists over and over and becoming bored with them regardless of how much I like the tunes or how good the sound quality is.
When I find this happening, I'll pick a random letter out of the alphabet and search through that letter until I find an unfamiliar artist. Often times this gives me that 'spark' of revitilization I need.

Ben, I feel for ya' Brother. Been there, done that.
All you need is that "spark".

Over the last couple of weeks I seem to not be enjoying music as much as I remember. This is strange for me as usually it is the one thing I can rely on to take me out of myself. Do you, at times, find it hard to listen?

Listening to music is a relief for me....since during the daytime I'm listening to AM news....weather ....and traffic in my car while working.

Try that during the daytime....you'll then really enjoy your night time tunes....8)

If I don't listen to music, I listen to the din of everything else; the guy down the street grinding the sidewalk with his edger, the kid across the street with his new 100 db sound for the day, the freeway, airplanes, a random car, and so on.

Music washes all of that crap off of me.

No, I never lose interest in listening to music. It's all of the other things I lose interest in listening to.

Have fun,
Jerry

I saw this thread earlier and wasn't going to comment, because I thought the answer was a resounding NO...  but now that I have actually given it some thought  the answer is actually a yes.  As much as I love music, sometimes I do get sick of it.  A big part of it is me getting sick of my own music collection, and then turning on the radio and only being able to find either the same 50 songs that form the core playlist for 99% of the classic rock stations, or the 50 songs that are the basis for an "oldies" station, or I find the crappiest "new" music station on the planet and get depressed because nobody is making any music that is any good anymore, and I feel like I have heard everything else already.  When I get to that point, I remember :duh: that's bullshit, there is a ton of music that I have not discovered yet, and a lot of it is good music.

A couple of folks have mentioned streaming internet radio...  great idea!  Listen to some Turkish ambient sitar grunge for a while...  Or see what's shakin' on the New Zealand aboriginal tip.  Or force yourself to listen to one New Kids on the Block song over and over and over again...  you will love your collection again in no time at all.  :thumb:

Cheers

Never.  I listen morning noon and night.  I do however grow tired of some of my favorite bands.  I will take a hiatus for a year or so and when I come back it is freakin AWSOME.

No silly..... :duh:
We're not talking about torturing yourself with Turkish ambient sitar grunge in order to regain appreciation for your own collection.
Let's say you're into the blues genre...Dishnetwork has "Bluesville", the SB/Duet has dozens of blues channels, DirecTv has a couple, etc... etc....
Have a pencil and paper handy when you're listening. Undoubtedly you'll hear a new artist that "does it" for you. Next you'll find yourself buying that album. Before you know it, you'll be looking to purchase the entire discography.  aa

I have lately; I've been training for a marathon, so I've got headphones on for hours and hours every week while jogging. I've been trying to listen to fresh stuff, downloading weird tracks (www.parisdjs.com is great) and other stuff...but it's almost too much exposure to music.
The marathon is in late September though, so I assume my interest will reemerge then.

I absolutely go through phases (could not resist that audio pun!).

In the summer, when the weather is better and my little ones want to go out more, it is harder to still get time in front of the main system.  I play pool every Thursday night with my best friend in my basement though, so I know I always get 3-4 hours there, with the tunes going - not sitting and listening specifically, but music through a system I really like, while I play a game I really like!  I also am afflicted with golf, so I spend hours on the course and at the range, that could otherwise involve my tunes.

In the winter, I tend to have more time for sitting and listening, although the siren song of the pool table just 5 feet away often has me playing and listening in that season too!

All year I can benefit from the system I put in my car, though I don't drive the distances I once did, so often that is just AM talk radio and news and weather etc.  For longer trips I will spin some cd's though, and enjoy more music that way, if not on my Bluetooth headset on conference calls.

I would say that there are seasonal distractions, and other passions, and of couse the realities of work, parenting that keep me from getting sick of listening at all, and most impact the way I listen now.

There will come those cold winter nights though, where I will sit for 4-5 hours with my SB3 remote, and mine the dark corners of the collection until WAY later than I should!

I know, Bob.  I was just having some fun, and Turkish ambient sitar grunge (if it existed) would probably be something that I would enjoy.   My tastes for music are very diverse.  I surf internet radio through my Transporter all the time, and services like Pandora and Last-FM are fantastic because they allow you to enter a few songs that you like and then build a playlist (around those songs) containing similar artists.  Most of the time they do really well, but when they play something that you don't like one click (maybe two) of the remote will give that song the   And you can add artists that you like on the fly to help steer it back to your taste if it starts going astray.  Those services and the "international" radio stations are a great way to expose yourself to new music.  Most of the song/artist/album info is available on the display of the Squeezbox/Transporter (thats where the pencil and paper that Bob mentioned comes in handy).  I can honestly say that I have not gone through a single lull in my music appreciation since I purchased my SB/TP.  Because of that, and my iPod I am listening to (and buying) more music than ever before...  and I used to work in a record store through college (I still miss my employee discount)...

I also am afflicted with golf

exceptionally well put.  I share the same affliction.  8)

It used to happen to me....not that I ever did totally without.  I got caught up in the whole HT thing and the stuff that makes movies go "boom" does not necessarily do the most justice to music (Harmon Kardon AV receiver and M&K 150THX speaker system at the time).  Then I went to separates, Rotel AV pre and 5 channel power.  That was better and rekindled my music desires.

After that happened, I scored a Scott 222C and fell for tubes.  Now my main 2 channel rig is a Cary SLI-80 and the BR system is a Manley Stingray.  The love affair is back, stronger than ever.  I'm not trying to start a solid state/tube war, just stating what works for me 8).

Chances of finding a sitar in Turkey would be slim!
You'd probably want to journey 1500 miles to the east to hear one!

Nope, never.

Although sometimes after a particularly awesome concert I like to drive home in silence.

I don't lose interest.  Sometimes other interests, however, overtake my musical interest and I will go days without music.  Family stuff, reading books, watching sports (live or on TV), playing golf (a must for sanity) and other athletic activities will take precedence over music at times but I always get back to music.
