Help assembling a system for Art Gallery
« on: 8 Aug 2009, 03:07 pm »
Hey guys
I'm not sure what circle to throw this in so I'll start here.  As some of you may or may not know I'm opening an art gallery in the spring.  I would like to design a system for the gallery with a $2k parts budget.  I'm well stacked with amps (Odyssey & Symphonic Line) so there should be no allowance for amp(s).  I'm not after a reference system, it will likely be played at moderate to low volume levels when people are in the gallery and a little higher when it's just me.  The gallery is 22ft wide, 90 ft long and 12ft tall with hard surfaces everywhere.  There is a partition wall midway down the 90 ft length that will allow me to separate the building into two spaces.  Because there is no real listening position I would like to have an omni-directional sound pattern.  Speakers should be small and ceiling mounted and provide the most life like sound for size I would like to fill the whole room with sound without people knowing where the speakers are.  I will use Mac and Turn Table as source, both of which I already own.   The room will probably require a sub or two as well.  All speakers will be DIY.  Any ideas?

Thanks
c.

When I worked at an art gallery we used in-ceiling speakers, rack mounted amps, and an ipod.  I'm with you on mounting the speakers/subs either in-wall or in-ceiling so as not to detract from the work on display.  We had a huge space and when we had any big event at the gallery you could barely hear the music, so whatever you do I would recommend using drivers that can play loud cleanly.  Also, our space was very reflective and sounded extremely bright/prone to echo when the gallery was empty, but when the space was filled up with people brightness and echoes were not a problem at all, so I guess you may want to keep that in mind too.

I think I saw an in-wall Tanzanite before, so maybe Selah Audio could cook something up that fits your criteria.

Good luck. :D

I would consider your Alpair 5 transmisson line cabs works of art. Put a price tag on them, 2 problems solved!  :green:

GR N2X kit.  I auditioned it and they were great.  $330 for the kit and you make the cool looking cabinets.  There is a pair traveling around, ask Danny.  You could probably try his free air sub too.

Wait a minute.  Don't you have some nice drivers for sale?
