My 9B is smoking help
« on: 7 Aug 2009, 03:26 am »
Hi all,

We heard a pop then smoke starts filling up the room.  I then lost one of the channel.

I think I still have over 10yrs of warranty left.  The dealer where I bought the 9B from "Harvey Electronics" were no longer in business.  What to do now?

Contact Bryston Service let them know the problem, then if need be pack it up and ship it back to them.  Bryston, as many will agree, is very good about these things and is known for their excellent customer service.

Hey Levi, I feel for you.If you have the original bill of sale I'm sure Bryston will fix you up.I had a problem with a 7B-sst.I used her for my centre.
I hadn't powered her up for maybe 3months.I turned her on and like you I could
hear a pop about every 3 seconds(the light was still green)I shut her off and
checked all connections, again and again.Good to go,we'llllllll I powered her up same thing only after 3-pops(not loud either)SMOKE CAME out of the amp,
NO HAPPY .i took her in and Bryston fixer her up :thumb:,I still can't figure that out as she's been in the rack for 4-5yrs.no problems and she worked great.
I bet James will fix you up,just a hunch.

That's what I was thinking.  Capacitor leaked shorting other components.  Shipping it back is in order.

If it's 10 years old that was from before they wanted to see the bill of sale -- they'll make things right -- they always do.

I had a similar incident playing Christmas carols through my 10 year old 3B NRB years ago, sent it into Bryston and Chris Russell miraculously turned it into a 3BST.

Probably just the cap leaked electrolyte onto a hot part. It smokes like crazy. Doubt anything but the cap is busted.

Hi TC,I purchased her in 2006,2 and a half yrs.old,my 4B-sst was shut off also
she's good.One of those things I guess.
When i powered up the 7B-sst,I installed bryston cables and for sure I checked
red to red ect.So when I heard her start to tick :o,I shut her off and puller her out, checked again SLOWLY(same hookup).Fired her up T,T,T,POOF,instant rag doll :violin:., :bawl:.i checked again to be sure and still can't figure out why she did that,But bryston came thru with flying colours :drums: :thumb:..

Hello again drummermitchell

Glad to hear everything worked out for you :thumb:

The 20 year warranty was another reason that I decided to purchase Bryston audio equipment - after sound quality of course.  The third reason was for aesthetics - something about a big, bland, 100 pound amplifier that reeks of attitude and is not covered by disco lights and other worthless bells and whistles :nono:

Bryston is located in my home town and if my ?Beasties? ever require service, it is less than a 2 hour drive to Peterborough to lovingly drop them off.

Take Care...

They do look terrific lurking on my audioracks, they look solid and they do give off a presence by themselvesbblack and nasty. As you say no fancy shaped boxes or them there pretty blue lights. If world class studios, musicians, ect. use bryston there is definately a reason why.I'd pay attention as these people do music 24/7.

I arranged to have my 9B serviced.  Just waiting for the original box to arrive.  Meanwhile, I took some pictures...

It is amazing that all electronic equipment stops working when the "magic smoke" escapes components  :bawl:
