Chris Squire, especially in the older Yes tunes,,,today I listened to Yesterdays and the ol' tunes with Peter Banks had incredible bass..

Danny Thompson from the Richard Thompson band...just gets out of the way, but fills in the low freq.

John Wetton can play a mean bass as well...

What....no mention of Charles "Charlie" Mingus.... :o

Bio........Music...

jimdgoulding

His composing and the groups he led overshadow his playing.  One of the greatest composers ever.

Chris Squire for rock
No one mentioned Marcus Miller for jazz

On the third page, no less...

He was the first that came to mind for me.

For the rock genre I'd have to second Jack Casady, Victor Wooten, Mark Sandman and Les Claypool.

srb listed Mingus halfway down the second page...and I 'thought' about Mingus but then felt his other roles surpassed his bass playing.

Ooops.  Missed that.

From the first notes of "Better Git Hit In Your Soul" I was hooked. IIRC it was the first jazz album I bought after I heard it at a party in college.

You guys have mentioned all my faves, but I'll add Phil Lesh to the list.

Mike Fox

Well, lets see!--- Alain Caron, Jonas Helborg, Jaco, of course, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clark, Les Claypool, for a start.
