Yeah, we need a thread listing the builders on the forum and what they do.

stereodude used formica laminate on the sub he built.

Two quick hits before I pull the trigger:

(1) Recommended custom enclosure manufacturers? I know elemental designs does well by folks, but don't know who in this Circle still does custom enclosures. I think I could handle a flat pack if all I needed to do was glue, but with no router or circle jig saw, I can't even do the PE box (which I know are very resonant)

(2) Anyone use black melamine or vinyl on a sub before? I may be able to pick up a honey oak enclosure at a slight discount - and was wondering if folks have refinished using the vinyl stuff?

That is a good idea.

Christof is a good resource as well. He also might like to respond.

This would be an awesomely helpful resource for those of less power-tool inclined/space constraint (::cough cough:: me ::cough cough::)!)

As I said, I am absolutely dead set on buying the 370PEQ with the SW-12-04. I think this is going to be awesome, but I want it to integrate both audibly and ::visually:: with my SB X-Statiks/X-Voce.

Given the lack of pre-built, satin black options - I am left with ED OR a flat pack + Formica 909 or Wilsonart vinyl laminate finishes (1594-01 gloss black, or 1594-60 matte black).

I bought a sheet of the Formica 909 for my subs. Haven't actually finished them yet but I have all the stuff now. I have three of the 370PEQ/SW-12-04 subs and let's just say I have no bass issues.  aa

I wouldn't go any smaller than 1.5 cubic feet. Going smaller demands more from the amp as the servo system tries to maintain a linear output, and the smaller box fights harder against it to doing that.

That is why with less power then box can be bigger and with more power the box can be smaller.

The A300 does not have the rumble filter or the additional 12db per octave selectable slopes at 50Hz and 80Hz.

Sorry to rehash this old thread - but I would like you to elaborate a bit more if you could.

If you take the T/S parms for the 12-04 and put into a subwoofer design software (assuming this was a conventional subwoofer - not a serveo design)- you get only 25 litre needed for a Q of 0.7.  With 1.5 cu ft (42 litre) its more like a Q of 0.56.  I would think the servo would work for both of these designs with the only downside - less output for the smaller box (and less efficient).

I'm interested in the most (musically clean) output for the smallest footprint (WAF). So while the 12" is already a pretty small box - I am wondering the same questions as the original poster - If you reduce the size of the box - what are you giving up besides max output?  Thanks as always.

The servo system changes the total system parameters beyond the T/S parameters measured on the main driver coil. The Q of the system becomes manipulated by the control of the amp and changes in damping.

A smaller box doesn't necessarily change the roll off like a typical woofer. It just means that the system adds more gain to maintain a linear response. So you loose out on some headroom and total output by making the box smaller.

Thanks Danny.  I understand the servo feedback effectively changes the TS params. And I understand that more amp power is needed for a given output - and thus the total output will be less with a smaller box.

One of the things I was thinking of was 2 of your SW-12-04s in a box with 50 liter total (25L for each driver) with the HX800 amp.  While this is not optimal, I suspect it has more output than a single sw-12-04 in a 42 liter box with the A370. (but obviously not as much a a pair of sw-12-04s each with a 42 liter box). The box could be a smallish 16.5" cube.

Over at the DIY SoundGroup site there is a guy named Erich offering sub flat packs. He has them cut out of MDF on a CNC machine, and all you have to do is glue them together. They come with a recessed driver cut-out, with double thick (1-1/2") baffle and bracing. They are offered in many sizes including 1.5 cubes, and are really nice, as is Erich.
