How cheap can audio get and still sound good?  Most of the mags would have us believe we need to spend at least 100K for our systems to be good, well it just ain't so.

Danny came by my house this morning and left a pair of his N1 speakers built in Parts Express Boxes, so that's approx $500.00.  I hooked them up with 18ga lamp cord, free almost.  Drove them with a Virtue model 1 amplifier, also from Danny, $269.00.  Hooked the amp to my dac with freebe interconnects.  The Dac is the new Cambridge DacMagic, $400.00.  Music is being feed to the dac via monster optical cable $30.00 from my Apple Macbook laptop.  I won't factor in the cost of the macbook as you could use a cheaper source.  Now that's a total of only $1300.00 plus a source.  Oh and the speaker stands are home made cheap.

So how good is it you ask?  Its unbelievable good.  I was startled when I first fired it up by the dynamics and clarity of this cheap little system.  I'm serious guys and gals, this system is real high end hifi on the cheap.  If you have not heard the N1's you have no idea what you are missing.  Oh and another plus, my wife said the N1's look nice !!!!!!!!!!

Update:

I have a pair of Linkwitz Orion's that I built back in 04-05.  I have felt they were the greatest thing ever.  Well this evening I have been listening to Danny's N1X speakers for a couple of hours and then switched back to my Orion's.  Yes the Orion has some things I like better, but then again the N1X does some things I like better than the Orion.  Now that's a sick feeling to think a $329.00 kit can match or better my $3000 dollars plus cabinet investment in the Orion's.  Danny has been kind enough to come by my house and help with tweeking my Orion X-over settings to get a better balance from the Orion's.  Now if I could just get him to loan me one of each of his speakers so I can compare them all!!!!!!!!!!

That's great! :thumb: You have a nice sounding minimalist system for the price of a couple of Majik Buses.

Nothing cheap about what Danny left behind. Just well thoughtout solutions to great sound.

To bad PE doesn't have anymore of those 15 dollar Belkin PureAV Silver speaker cables. Those were a killer deal.

Yes these have a high WAF. :D

I had some friends over last night to hear these and they were blown away by both the sound and the looks.  The PE boxes with the N1X kit received another high WAF approval.

I had some more fun today with the N1X speakers.  I used them in a home theater setting as the mains in my living room.  Sony Playstation 3, hdmi to my plasma, variable audio outs to the Virtue 1 amp which drove the N1X's.  The beginning of Open Range, the thunder storm, was very convincing with these speakers.  And that was running them full range with no sub.  These speakers continue to amaze me.

You'll have to spend $17-$25 to buy a pair via the internet. Overpriced?

bump  please re-read my first post on this topic.

Zero

Although I am one of those "mag guys" that often write about systems that cost as much as a new sports car, I too feel that you can get fantastic sound for not a lot of cash. For example, one of my guilty pleasures has been running a simple E-MU1212M professional soundcard ($200 USD), a TEAC Legacy AL700p amp (100 USD), into a pair of Polk Audio LSi-7's (can be picked up new for around $400 on Polk's ebay store)..  and ya know what - it sounds great for what it is. Systems like the ones mentioned in the original post, along with the one I cite here, are shining examples that you really don't have to pay a lot to get a lot. Thankfully there are many great people/manufacturers working hard to offer products that enable attaining great sound on a truly low budget.

As an aside, outside of a few av123 offerings, I haven't had the opportunity to get my ear on Danny's catalog of loudspeakers. I hope to change that one day. Hey Danny, will you be at RMAF ?

You bet I will.

sl_1800,You might want to try coming out of the USB port of your MAC and into a Xitel USB to spdif converter and connect to the DacMagic via a glass fiber optic cable this should sound better than the optical out of the Mac,less jitter. Here is a link to the item on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/Xitel-MiniDisc-MD-Port-DG2-PC-Link-Optical-Cable_W0QQitemZ330322709155QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4ce8c48aa3&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
