Is Live from Mars a good album for introduction to this artist?

If not, what do you recommend?

I think Fight for Your Mind is the place to start.  Then again I am not the biggest fan so others may disagree.

There are 2 sort of general "types" of Ben Harper songs/styles. There's the folksy, mellow, stripped down Ben Harper with great lyrics and feel, and then there's the amped up, rocking Ben Harper with full band, etc. For the first type, I think Welcome to the Cruel World is the best place to start. His finest songwriting, IMO and a really nice thoughtful album. For the second, Fight for Your Mind, or the newer Both Sides of the Gun are good.

Live from Mars is great, and the interesting thing is that it has 2 discs, split in style just as I mentioned earlier. So, I actually think it would be a great introduction.

PS. The studio recordings are really nicely recorded/produced albums, I really enjoy them on the stereo.

He is not one of my favorite artist either.  I just don't get the attraction for some reason.  Well recorded studio music, but I just don't connect with him like a lot of people seem to for some reason.

How is the recording quality of the live album compared to the studio ones?

I haven't listened to it in a while, but I don't remember being impressed. In fact, I haven't listened to it in years for that very reason. Maybe it's time to pull it out again.

I got into Ben Harper, from recommendations from lonewolf and others here.  Get " Fight for your Mind " 1st .  Awesome!   If you like that, get Live from Mars next to try some live stuff.  If you're still into him, start diving in headfirst.    fiveoclockfriday has some great advice.

I bought FFYM first.  Excellent CD music and sound.
Then his second newest.  I don't want to say I was under whelmed, but I was under whelmed.  :)   I guess I wanted more like FFYM so I was being a little unfair.  I will be getting his latest and the Marrs CD eventually.

Thank you all for your inputs.  I ordered the vinyl FFYM from B&N with a 20% off coupon.

There are some deals on vinyl records at Barnes & Noble, especially with these periodic discount coupons to go with the standing member discount.  :thumb:
