Damn Yankee Workshop: Balsa-mic diffusor
« on: 16 Jul 2009, 01:07 am »
Just ordered a bunch of balsa plank from a hobby shop (they probably think I'm attempting a scale model of the Constitution) and I'm going to build 4 48"x48" diffusor arrays to hang from the ceiling.
The planks are 3/8" thick x 48" long and I ordered a variety of 3, 4 and 6" widths so I end up with staggered cell depths...no computer modeling or anything but for $200 in materials I figure what the heck as the Auralex stuff would cost ten times that for the same coverage.

I chose balsa as if one lets loose I'm hoping it won't kill my feral feline

I briefly thought of small rocks...but that would be too tedious a medium

Bob,  This is what Auralex offers and what I'm aiming to duplicate...save for mine will have staggered cell depths for "better" diffusion...at least that's the idea.
I'm still in the process of working up some templates to minimize confusion during build

Ahhh, ok! Very nice.  Much less tedious than small rocks, but a fairly monotonous looking project none-the-less.
Way to go!

Don't laugh...I was thinking about doing just that with thin sheets and gluing them together to make a laminate ala' Magico :thumb:

I like Wedweb's idea, particularily if I had a furnace that burned wood waste!

Interesting that they base this around a square air chamber, probably for ease of construction.  Non-parallel surfaces would be more interesting in a noncartesian way, though more tedious to build and a lot less 'normal' looking.

I'm guessing that since other diffusors are of similar pattern it is most likely not an issue(?)
I might break out the mitre box and sharpen a pencil for round 2 if the first is not sucessful.

If you got a sheet of blue or pink foam board of say 2" thickness and one of 1/2" thickness.  Couldn't you take a large (3") hole saw bit and cut circles out of the 2" board all the way through, then glue the 1/2" board on the top.  Hang it up or put fabric over it?
