High Desert Music Playlist

I once saw a thread where this fellow hauled a big pair of Lascala's in his pickup truck out into the desert hills to camp out and ride bikes.  Always wondered what kind of music you would play under the high sky with no walls for miles and only the coyotes to listen.  Have always envisioned some Crosby Stills Nash, or maybe Pavement Range Life, a track or two of Giant Sand, or even some Jackson Browne or Sonny Rollins.  Sounds like a good idea for a playlist.  Any recommendations?

Pavement would be great. I think Steve Reich's "The Desert Music" would be a good and obvious choice, along with "The Desert" from Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers. I'd also be inclined to add some Ennio Morriconne for the High Plains/Spaghetti Western feel.

Probably some of the moodier Roy Orbison or Chris Isaak, for some ethereal vocals. Although it feels a little Middle Eastern, Steve Tibbett's stuff makes me think of the desert. For some reason Tom Waits "Bone Machine" makes me think of the desert too.

Desert Sessions - Numerous volumes

Queens of the Stone Age
Monster Magnet
Giant Sand / Howe Gelb
Calexico
The Cashmere Jungle Lords
Iron & Wine

Basically, my mind goes toward either south-western nouveau americana or stoner rock.

Cruise to Chris Whitley - "Big Sky Country"...from "Living with the Law"

Breakout with MC5 - "Kick Out The Jams".....turn it up..no one's around...

Coast to Roxy Music -"Avalon"...

Chill down with Tosca - "Dehli9"....

Fall asleep dreaming of the beach....damn dessert is too hot
....so....."Getz/Gilberto"......

thanks for the great ideas.  I am a playlist newbie - typically copy whole albums into a list - eg for party tunes copy a cd by Pink Martini, add some Al Green, and maybe Bob Marley's greatest hits, a little Stan Getz Girl from Ipanema, shuffle it all and everyone loves the mix.  Tried that with this bunch copying some CSN, Pavement's Crooked Rain, and then Steve Reich, some Giant Sand Chore of Enchantment and finally some America - have a Greatest Hits live.

What a mess - didn't work at all - just a clash of styles.  Going to have to work a little harder at this to create my desert night, high sky soundtrack.  Today I start cherry picking some tracks - will let you know if I can get the wolves errr coyotes howling by midnight.
