HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: 10 Jul 2009, 03:53 am »
Just hooked up my system that was working fine before I moved. Now there is almost no volume or bass when it plays. What could cause such a drastic reduction in volume bass? It's probably at 10% what it should be.

New Room?
Phase?

Might be phase, but as far as I can see everything is hooked up correctly. I hooked up my system with 2 different sets of speaker cables--same problem each time. A few of the binding posts on the back of my Revelations are loose. The entire post and housing will turn as they get tight. Maybe an internal problem? I've never had this problem before. It's like there are 2 enormous pillows muffling the sound.

Substitute components until you find the problem.  If both speakers sound the same, then it is probably not the speakers. Maybe the amp's or preamp's power supply?  Stick some spare gear in there to evaluate.

I'll do some swapping tonight. I've already tried 2 amps so it's off to the source.

Does the preamp have a mute button or one of the tape monitor buttons pushed in? Sometimes stupid things like that can trip a guy. Is there an adjustable gain on the back of the preamp?

Also some source somponents may cause problems. Like Rich suggested, undo everyting but speakers, amp, preamp and 1 source. If this works, start adding things one at a time. If it does work, then tell us what's going on.

If your amp has a balanced/unbalanced switch in the rear be sure it's in the right position.  This tripped me up once.

Sorry, I see that you already tried 2 amps.  When you say two enormous pillows in frontof the speakers, that sounds like your tweeters are not working. I'm not familiar with your speakers, but with many speakers you can remove the woofer easily to see if the crossover is connected to the inside of the binding posts and if the drivers are still connected to the crossover. While you're in there, you can also tighten the nuts on the inside of the binding posts. Are your speakers fused?

Are your speaks biwired? You are probably hooking your speaker wire up the higher end posts with no connect to the lower speaker bindings. sounds like it anyway

Hope it helps

MUCH easier to help you if you list all of your basic components and let us know if your speakers have dual sets of binding posts.
