Decent raid controller
« on: 9 Jul 2009, 08:48 pm »
I am trying to find a decent Raid controller to run on what will be my music server, I was thinking this http://tinyurl.com/2hsyto since it was on sale and could do up to 5 HDD at once if needed.  Any suggestions?

Thanks
Jared

Seeing as this has gone unanswered for so long I'll take a stab at it.
That Rosewill card you link to only has 4 internal ports, the other two are eSATA; technically it could do 6 hard drives but I don't know if a fifth external drive is really what you were intending.

Can you be more specifics about your music server? what kind of open i/o slots do you have on it? something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815121009would be good if you have a PCI-X or PCI-64bit slot.

Actually after reading the specs of the controller on that Rosewill card you link to I do not believe it will support more than 4 hard drives.
"Rosewill special design, ?Magic Switch?, allows two modes operation.
Mode one: You can active 4 internal SATA ports and two external e-SATA is off-line.
Mode two: You can active 2 internal + 2 external SATA ports for connecting your e-SATA enclosures and SATA devices. In this mode, two internal SATA channel will be off-line."
