Two DCX questions
« on: 5 Jul 2009, 03:05 am »
1.)  In adjusting the gain (in this case attenuation) is it better to attenuate at the inputs or the outputs or a combination of the two? Or maybe it doesn't matter?
I want to minimize losses due to dropping bits if in fact it has an effect here.

2.)  I'm having trouble getting precise settings with the data wheel. The readings may jump from 2 to 8 increments even when turning the wheel very slowly and carefully.
Is this typical and is there a trick to get more precision, or might this be a problem with this particular DCX?

Thanks,
Jerry

My understanding is that it is best to run the Behringer jjust short of clipping for best results. I do not have the sligtest difficulty setting with my gain wheel, however my unit was highly modified by Mike Galusha and I think about the only original parts left are the processor, the display, and the case!  :D

Depending on what is being set, the control is not completely linear or as resolving as expected. Setting the XO frequency in particular. It does not allow picking frequencies at the 1Hz level. It may jump from 270 to 273 to 277.. etc. The software for a PC allows you to enter anything you like, but once it's uploaded to the DCX, it will jump to the closest supported frequency. I believe the levels will allow .1dB steps but it's been too long since I've played with one.

As for setting the gain, run it as high as possible. This will minimize noise and maximize resolution. Since the DCX is a pro audio piece the gain structure is not really suited for home audio use. There are various mods to address this. Browsing the archives of the Yahoo DCX group will reveal a lot of information though it takes some digging.

Also, if you are using single ended equipment with the dcx, it sounds much better if you use a Jensen xlr-rca transformer converter box.  I was using cardas xlr adapters, and there's no contest, the Jensen is much more musical and less dry sounding.

Also, the Jensen increases the input gain 14db, closer to the level that pro gear "expects".  If you use one on the outputs of the dcx, it also will step down the output 14 db as well, so you don't overload the inputa of single ended consumer gear.

Finally, the Jensen converter boxes have multiple options for changing the grounding for your interconnects, which reduces hum and noise in your system.

If you shop around a bit you can find them for $185, very well worth it, IMO.

Thanks Paul and Mike. That clears up the gain issue and I'll learn to futz with the data wheel.

Tyson, I have all balanced connections in and out of the DCX, so no need for adapters. But thanks for the tip on the Jensen. I need to convert rca-xlr for my tt/phono-pre and it should work well there.
