Headphones and adapter unit are in very good condition. The adapter unit connects to the speaker outputs (main or secondary of the amplifier. The speakers then connect to the back of the adapter unit. And the switch on the front of the adapter box allows you to switch between headphones and speakers.
Being electret headphones (similar to their pure electrostatics), they need the higher voltages available at the speaker output, and cannot be driven by the lower voltage present at headphone jacks.
Stax, of course, are very special, very transparent, very airy, and true to their electret/electrostatic roots.
The negative, if there is one, is that the speaker terminals at the back of the adapter box are spring connectors, and will not accept anything thicker than 18 gauge directly. I was planning to replace them with binding posts or low rise banana jacks from Radio Shack, but never got around to it, and I don't use headphones enough to justify it.
