power issue - please help
« on: 1 Jul 2009, 02:52 am »
OK so here's the situation.  I bought a new Marantz SR6003 Receiver.  Connected to my Candela HT bypass for a few weeks without issue.  Then had a minor issue with my switch and sent into Alex.  Fixed promptly and returned.  Hook it up to my 2ch DAC and sounds great.

BUT, as soon as I plug in my Receiver to AC power (and it goes into "stand by" mode) I get about a 20 dB drop in sound from the DAC / Candela!

When I power the Receiver "on" the volume returns to normal.

Note, the Receiver is completely dsconnect from the pre.

Also, I connected the Receiver to a long extension cord and tried a bunch of different AC outlets and circuits around the house, with the same issue.

It's almost like the Receiver, when powered in standby is sucking power from the pre.

What the hell is going on?!?

Please advise.

Thanks, Bob

I've also got my Candela HT Bypass hooked up with an AVR (Rotel 1057) and have issues if the Rotel is on standby mode.  If I want to  listen to just the Candela I have to turn the Rotel completely off.

I use to have a Rotel RSP1066, and had the same issue.  Fortunatley, I could completely turn off the Rotel.  Unfortunately, I don't think I can completely turn off the Marantz, ie. either in "stand by" or "on".

Alex explained the issue to me.  To summarize: my receiver (and many other brands) doesn't really shut all of the way down when in "standby", rather much of the internal processing / signals are dumped to ground.  Anything connected to the receiver (DVD, cable box, sub, speakers, TV, etc) will spread this signal around.  My Candela is being influenced by the resultant ground loop.

I mentioned that I have both the Receiver and Candela (via 2nd pair of outs) connected to my sub.  He suggests I try disconnecting one to see if that is the primary source of the loop.  I'll try tonight, and if it is the source I can install a switch....or just live with the inconvenience of keeping the reciever "on" whenever I use the Candela (which is probably what I'll do).

Problem solved.  As Alex suggested I disconnected one of the runs to my sub, and that did it.

So now either I...
1) choose to use the sub with either HT or 2ch
2) install a 1:2 way RCA switch at the sub or
3) leave the receiver on while I use the Candela for stereo.

I think I'll look into a switch.  Figure I'll leave it set to the Candela run most of the time, including while watching TV, and only switch over to the receiver run for movies.

Thanks Alex!
