Odyssey Intrigue

Good name for the next model?

Hi folks, I'm in the market for a used amp and am seeing Odyssey Stratos amps with a few years going for $700 or so.  I like the price.  If I got one I would go for the cap upgrade.  My speakers are Thiel CS3.5, my room is 20'x20'x12' with the wall opposite the system open to the house (this is an addition).  I've tried the Aragon 8008BB which would be similar in price to what I'm suggesting here, but 2200VA (2x1100VA toroids) and 120,000uF.  I really like the sound of them and their horsepower to drive this black hole of power called the CS3.5s.  Would a basic Stratos with the cap upgrade compare in terms of raw horsepower with these speakers?

I have a pair of stock Stratos Mono Blocks and they drive my 87db 4ohm System Audio Ranger speakers just fine.  I do not know your speakers other than the specs, which are similar to mine so I'm guessing you would be okay with the stock Stratos.

I would not be using them as mono, but a single amp to drive both speakers.  Preamp is a Denon PRA-1500.

Also, this one for Odyssey Audio:  If I purchase a unit used, how do I know that I will be eligible for the warranty?  Sometimes these units come from private buyers with no records.  Can I email in the serial number and see if I would be eligible for the warranty?  I do not intend on buying a unit more than 2 years old.

There is a difference between the two but I can't imagine the stereo amp would not drive your speakers just fine.  I'm sure someone else will chime in.

This will fit you bill nicley. The cap upgrade is worth the extra $ there is no substatute for the extra juice. Don't kmow the seller but tha amp is Killer.

Give Klaus a call.  He can answer all your questions and is great to work with.  I talked to him before buying my Candela used and he was very helpful.  317-299-5578

Anyone know how to check and see if a second hand unit would be covered by warranty?

Ask Klaus.  He is a good guy and a phone call away.  My understanding is that the warranty is transferable to the second owner and not beyond.

when I got my amps I planned on driving Maggies (3.6's), and I asked Klaus about this. He simply said no problem! That's a much harder load than the Thiels. But if I had a 20' x 20' room the Thiels would be on Audiogon. I'd be listening to Maggies!

Klaus is sure tough to get ahold of...

Can anyone comment on the green vs. red board issue for the Odyssey Stratos Plus (base unit with 120,000uF).  I know nothing about it, but have been told I might want to know.  The unit I'm looking at is about 2 years old.  Thanks!

Sounds like you were doing mono, I just want a single unit to drive the pair.  What do you think?
