compact p&s vs flip video
« on: 30 Jun 2009, 07:34 pm »
We happen to get a discount for the flip video cameras at work.

After doing a little investigation, there were several common comments stating the video quality of the flips are ok, but nothing spectacular. They would point out the fact you have limited low light usage, limited zoom, small lcd, and can't take photos... several people were suggesting a small compact (like the Canon Poweshots) instead of a flip.

My question: Has anyone used an HD capable flip and compare the video quality as compared to something like the Canon 960IS. Yeah the Canon would be a little bit more, but having all the other capabilities in one device is apealing.

Thoughts?

What exactly is a flip video camera? Is that a small 'upright' with SDRAM?

It is a small upright... everything is stored in internal flash, software is included on the device, and has a flip out usb thingy that allows you to plug directly into a computer. The have 4 models... 2 are smaller sized like a digital elph/powershot (smaller ones record up to 1 hour of video), there is a larger one that is quite a bit thicker, little longer and wider - these record 2 hours of video.

With the small and large sizes... there is an HD capable and standard def capable. I was initially looking at the HD related ones... MSRP for the larger sized (2 hours) is $199, smaller (1hr) is $229.

Street prices are cheaper...

As I see it, downsides are: Very tiny LCD, digital zoom (limited) only, and can only capture video
If you look at something like a Canon SD780IS, street price wise you're pretty close and it can capture HD video, much bigger LCD, 3x optical zoom, and you can take pictures.

What I don't know if the quality of the video from the canon line. I'm not expecting much considering the price - just curious if the canon is in the same league as the flip video quality wise, or if it's not even close.

Was hoping to keep the ultimate purchase under $300 - the Canon SD960 just fits in that range. If any one knows of other similarly priced compacts that record HD, and are of decent quality I'm all ears.

OK, CVS used to sell these - they would put the video on DVD for you. This is the advanced evolution of that concept.

My feeling is that SD is not yet ready for prime time, and the cost of SD probably means the video side of things is compromised.

I got an excellent Canon camcorder for $650 from B&H photo. Mine was tape but they also have hard drive. It can't be that much more convenient to use a flip IMO. With a 'real' camcorder you get much more benefit.

I have used a Cannon IS camera to shoot video and it was probably what I would expect from the best flip camcorders out now. Canon probably gives you better lenses and IS in the IS cameras.

In 6 months things may be different, considering I am not up to the minute on all this video-to-solid-state technology.
